Second Sat. Deer season in Maine

I was out and about a place that a new Maine friend told me about.

Just a little south of Bangor I was walking the mixed woodlands near a large pond where I have seen deer and there are tracks and other signs.

My gun of choice is my TC Contender with a 10" 44 magnum barrel that Gary or his crew expertly threaded for a suppressor. I have a SilencerCo Hybrid 46 M suppressor with a direct mount for this particular set up.

I know some admonish me for using a electronic sight but here in the brushy northeast where I hunt the average shot is going to be less than 50 yards.

I sat on the edge of a marsh where there is sign but alas did not see anything but red squirrels. They seem to be a bit of a bane. Those things like to swarm around me and chatter away.

I did get up and decided to do a slow walk as I knew of a run and some scrapes up the hill. As I walked, I spotted something odd in a tall tree. Sure enough, it was a porcupine. Now with a Maine hunting license they are legal to shoot year-round. Kind of a varmint class of animal and I am sure if you own an orchard, you would not appreciate them too much. I did not shoot as I was deer hunting, and I just did not want to waste an animal. I could understand if I owned an apple orchard and it was girdling my stock, but it was just doing its thing.

Now in the future after deer season I may shoot one to do some culinary experiment as well as some artwork with the quills.

On the way back I waited at my truck. I spotted my friend's truck, and he was still deep in the woods at an abandoned cabin on top of a hill.

Just at dark I was meandering about the area when I heard a doe blow at me and saw the familiar flag crossing the road heading west. Too late in the day for an ethical shot. But I will remember it for Monday( No Sunday Hunting in Maine) . I have a feeling she will be in the same area and I have a doe permit for that zone.

Hopefully I will have another short story of taking a deer with this new set up. With the backpacker sling it is a slick set up. [image]
