Anyone use the Talley one piece lightweight encore scope mount? I’m looking to put a Burris 2-7x32 handgun scope on one of Gary’s encore barrels. Wondering if I need a high or medium scope mount? Should I get extended of Standard? To many options. Thanks for your help

I have leupold dual dove tails mounts

on all of my GNR Encore barrels. I use the Burris or Leupold handgun scopes with long eye relief. If you are coming to the HHC next week I will show them to you and let you shoot a couple of them to see what you like. If not, then look real carefully at the leupold dove tail mounts. They are steel and will hold up to heavy or light recoil and maintain true on the scope body. I use the low dove tail mounts, if you have a high or medium option, then go with the one that is closest to the barrel without putting the bell of your scope on the barrel. Just my opinion but that is the way I have all of my Encores.

I’ve used their all steel set. Allow would work but

You need to ensure it stays put. Different metals expand and contract differently warming then cooling. I like the “rifle” Encore base for dual dovetails. It’s longer and placed more forward compared to the pistol specific base. Using long eye relief scopes it’s better for me to have more of the scope over the barrel than having the eyepiece hanging way out back. As you said lots of variations.

"Alloy", silly phone. Shown pistol vs rifle base.

The .41 GNR on top has the "rifle" spec. Encore base. Likely a Leupold. The .450 GNR shows what I like LESS, hanging out over the rear. Burris scopes are notoriously long body so they work well with the longer base with more space for the long body. JD Jones, a friend of Gary's from way back, had a theory. It might have a spark of validity. He figured that having rings "close" allowed more scope body "flex" in recoil and added to premature scope failure. He then went on to make a good living selling 3 and 4 ring alloy scope base sets. I will say I never had one of those get loose and the old Leupold 2X and 4X, B&L scopes we used in those days were so robust you hardly ever heard of a failure. I shoot lots more now and much more powerful hand boomers.

Medium rings seem to work best for me. The .41 GNR has them. The .450 looks to have "low" Millet's with the S.O.S. tops on them. Note the access for cocking the hammer, perhaps with gloves? The Ruger system with the scope over the barrel is well protected and genius to me.

the only problem with switching the bases like that is they

don't have the right contour and they tend to wobble themselves loose. The encore base sitting on a G-2 barrel leaves a lot to be desired with a lot of space under it. The Contender base on the encore barrel also doesn't match up with the contour of the barrel at all, leaving an air space all the way end to end. This makes you have to use longer screws which tend to vibrate loose. We get TC barrels in here from time to time where they have the wrong base on the barrel and it is wobbly and ready to fall off. Neither are really a good way to go.

Sharp eye! I was eluding to Encores only. But

to make it work on the smaller barrel diameter Contender one really needs to use epoxy to bed the mount. While easy once you see the trick it may be beyond the comfort zone of the casual Handgunner. It is completely removable if you use the 5-minute type.

I always make sure my screws are a correct fit, even hole to hole it can differ. I have the burned finger tips to prove it.

I do lots of things others might should think twice before copying.

I wouldn't use any base and rings other than the Leupold

dual dovetail set up. There is no normal way the rings can come loose. To come loose they would have to shear almost 1" of solid steel off the base of the rings, and that isn't going to happen. Put a tiny bit of 2 part epoxy under the front of the base and the base and rings are there forever.
