Thought these might be interesting to see. The expanded bison bullet next to an unexpanded one with a 9mm for comparison. 402gr weight retention, 500gr initial weight.

The bullet did exactly what it was designed to do with zero wasted energy. Stopped in the off side hide. What good does a slug that penetrates and is still going 1000 fps in the beyond? Wouldn’t it be better for expansion to slow it to a stop as your bullet? It’s interesting to me.

No sir. A big hole in. A big hole out. That is The Best. There is no such thing as "wasted energy" with bullets. They don't have "energy" in the common way we think of energy.

I once hung a 48 pound Mesquite log on a 6 foot arm and measured how hard various guns and loads hit it.

A 300 Winchester Magnum had about as much hitting power as a 24 oz. claw hammer swung as hard as you could.

Preaching to the choir, you know I love cast bullets with a flat tip. The bone smashing, in and out, is where I live.

Your test numbers are worth revisiting. Not sure what it means but it is interesting. The .357 is twice as much as the 9mm, the rifle and BIG pistols are pretty close and some 12X that of the 9mm as a base. As I said not sure what it correlates to.

I saw on Mythbusters how the impact energy did little to move objects, but how that translates to blood vessels and internal organs is a different matter. I just watched a guy shoot a 2 liter bottle filled with water with a .50 BMG and some 12,000 ft. lb. kinetic energy. My .17 HMR rimfire does more damage! You'd have thought it would have vaporized it. I get more questions every day than I do answers.

and the heavier the bullet the more movement ... the old 45-70 500 gr. load pushed that log well past 5"!! It would be fun to see what that 450 NE would do!

I was kinda surprised it wasn't through and through at that distance too. But when looking at the shoulder, the whole joint was destroyed, which is where the majority of the energy was absorbed. That it had enough energy to continue through the rest of the animal is still quite impressive. The DGX is supposed to have rapid initial expansion but limited continued expansion so it worked as advertised even going through a shoulder. I suspect the DGS bullet would have been in and out and still be going if I had let it loose.
Would be interesting to apply these rounds to Jim's ballistics pendulum!
