Reeder Custom Guns - .401 GNR and .410 GNR

Tell me about these two rounds. I know there is a big difference in them but I like the middle calibers. I am still contemplating my build and being kinda fickle doesn’t help. I know I want a Flattop and a Bisley grip and a 5 inch barrel but after that I am waffling. I like the idea of a medium frame 5 shot .401 GNR with 10mm and .38-40 cylinders but a large frame in the .410 GNR might be a great choice for hunting

I was/am under the impression they are ballistic twins, the .41 has a wide range of hunting type bullets, both jacketed and cast. The .401 is limited some, due to most being made for 10mm auto/40s&w. However you ca. resize .410 down, and use those as well. The 38/40 5-shot with tight chambers will get you hot on the heels of the other two.

I have so many of Gary's creations, I have never had a .410 GNR on the .454 case. It requires a 5-shot Blackhawk conversion except on a Redhawk 6-shot re-chamber. I do have a couple .429 GNR on the same case, just a bit bigger. One is a Super Redhawk, and a 1894 SS Marlin custom.

I do have a .41 GNR on the .44 Magnum case. Those typically are 6-shot. A simple cylinder ream can convert a .41 Remington. Mine is a Ruger SBH Bisley Hunter and a G2 Contender 10".

I like odd stuff and love the .400 caliber. I had my .401 GNR on the .44 Magnum case done as a #5 style with some unique features. Relieved recoil shields, lower frame like the Colt Lightning and Thunderer, flat topped before factory offered, in stainless. Barrel band front sight too on the heavy 6" barrel. The .401 is also typically a 6-shot. I also commissioned a .40 S&W cylinder since I have so much .40 brass and can seat the bullets to 10mm OAL and load full 10mm loads in the same brass. Gary can do me a .38-40 cylinder when I get ready too.

The .410 has an edge in bullet selection and power but with resources the more elusive .401 GNR can show out too. The 230 gr. FNGC custom bullets I shoot are only about 100 fps behind the .410 GNR's 255 gr. The 200 gr. run about the same as the .410 GNR 255's. An old Indian trick is to lightly lube a .410" bullet and push it through a .401" LEE sizer in your press "making" custom .401" jacketed bullets. The 170 and 210 gr. Serria's are most pleasing. I have even done that to 300 gr. .405 Winchester bullets for the .401 Winchester Self Loading.

You can't really go wrong and please don't try to mimic me! Man, you got to keep on being you. Go for it.

and a .410 GNR. Both are just a rechambering job. Both work perfectly. Both use easy to find brass. Both are good killers. In the .410 I always use commercial .454 brass to just shoot and hunt with properly head stamped brass, and did so with the .41 GNR. Both of mine were pleasant to shoot, with .410 being much easier than the parent .454. My .454 was a super Redhawk.
A handload of the .410 with a copper powder coated cast hp in a black oxide hull is to me a thing of beauty. The different between the .454 and the .410 as to recoil is vast at least me. You can be happy with either one.

My take was I could not really tell much difference between it and the .429 GNR. Both are very powerful. The .44 affords a wider range of bullets and weights but that is a moot point to me.

I'd figure the .41 GNR / .401 GNR (6-shot)are about 80-85% of the performance of the larger .410 GNR 5-shot SA.

230 gr FNGC bullets? I find 200s everywhere but nothing heavier.

Take ant .41 bullet and transform it into a .401! Only $25 and lasts forever.

It is incredibly powerful and a very flat shooting tack driver! To date mine has dropped 4 cows and 2 bulls, 7 hogs, 3 muleys and lots of paper. It will only be sold at my estate auction....

a good friend took in Africa. The second animal taken was on the same day and was an African Savannah Buffalo I took with the 255 grain hard cast gas check bullet. One shot on the point of shoulder broke that shoulder and blew up both lungs and dropped him within 50 yards.
