Do you think a 50 Alaskan Encore pistol is good for a cape buffalo?

I've never had the opportunity to hunt Cape Buffalo. I actually know a few folks ( not just conversing with the folks here ) that have used the 500 Linebaugh on them with good success. The 50 AK in an Encore barrel should have an advantage in velocity and/or bullet weight if you so desire.

Hopefully I can get it up to 1900 fps. I killed a buff in 2018 with 416 Taylor, 400gr. at 2050fps. First shoot was a killer, broke left shoulder, took out left lung and busted diaphragm. Could not get up. Put 3 finishers in him. Did NOT want him to get up.

and you are just talking about 30 grains more weight. The problem is being able to handle more recoil than that without flinching.

larger Cape Buffalo plus maybe a special hunt thrown in. My problem is trying to jack up my power and still being able to handle the recoil. My 41 GNR last week on that Watusi hurt like a bitch and my hand stayed swollen the entire trip home. So I have 7 months to get that hand back in shape. To be honest I don't know how much more recoil I can handle. I don't think there will be a problem with handling the 450 GNR again with a 500 grain bullet, although I may cry like a little 8 year old girl afterward. But if I get that special hunt I will need something with a lot more punch. Sean is doing the ballistics right now. I need a 500 grain solid at 2200 fps and i don't know if my hand will handle that. Hopefully. And being your are so much older and weaker than me I worry about you handling more than that puny little 416 Dowop you used last time.

Teflon coated for penetration and it still took 3 shots with a 375 H&H to end it all.

offer a full line of teflon coated bullets all the way down to 32 ACP. The press got wond of it and started calling them "cop killer bullets" even though no cop was ever killed with one or even shot and wounded with one. They stated constantly that they would penetrate a bullet proof vest or any body armor a cop would be wearing. The bad press eventually put them out of business.

the wrist lately for gimmick hunts. Like the guys using a 10mm Glock for Cape Buffalo. And another using a S&W 629 in 44 mag for buffalo. I agree that it can be done but you better have a good PH behind you with a big rifle. And I am being a bit of a hypocrite here as I have taken an African Savannah Buffalo with my 410 GNR, one shot, but I had plenty of back up if needed and I was a lot younger and dumber back then. I realize that the 475 Linebaugh, the 500 Linebaugh and my 510 GNR have taken Cape Buffalo but it sure seems like a gimmick. Hell I know of 2 elephant taken with my 510 GNR and a 350 grain hard cast bullet but I sure don't have the cajones to do that.

I’d think 450 grs. minimum, maybe even one of those new “punch” bullets, get it up north of 1700 fps. It’s pretty ouchy. The flip side would be a more wieldable something like a .375 cal. using smaller and faster bullets.

It’s placement and penetration. More so than ft. lbs. muzzle energy I figure. I’m splitting the difference with a .416 GNR Encore and 400 gr. at 1900 fps. Or my back up .378 GNR and 300 gr. at 2100.

It’s your bucket list.

"There is no substitute for the weight of metal." coming from someone who used a "long 2" or a "3". The long 2 shot a two ounce round ball and the "3" shot a three ounce round ball or 4 ounce conical. The Conical was propelled by 16 drams of fine black powder. ( 437.5 grains as I figure )

put my Cape Buff down with one shot. I hit him quartering toward me and he dropped with one shot. You can see the entrance wound just above the point of shoulder.

The 50 AK has about the same power as the 450 GNR as both are based on the same piece of brass and using about the same weight bullet and so on. So to answer your question, if you put the bullet in the right spot, yes it will work.

Limitation is recoil. So there has to be a balance between mass , sectional density, and velocity. I am in the camp for go down in caliber to gain sectional density for the minimum mass needed for the highest velocity to do a he job. So if min for buffalo is say 500gr at 2000fps I would rather try that with a .475 or .450 than a .500. If 400gr at 2000fps is enough than a .416 would be better. In general I like the lighter end for any caliber at higher velocity for any cartridge.
