Limitation is recoil. So there has to be a balance between mass , sectional density, and velocity. I am in the camp for go down in caliber to gain sectional density for the minimum mass needed for the highest velocity to do a he job. So if min for buffalo is say 500gr at 2000fps I would rather try that with a .475 or .450 than a .500. If 400gr at 2000fps is enough than a .416 would be better. In general I like the lighter end for any caliber at higher velocity for any cartridge.
