lousy shot is your targets last a long time and you get a lot of your lead back to be recast.

Screened my back stop today and recovered about 50 lbs. of lead for retraining. I got the biggest share out but still more in there.

Been trying to wear this target out for a long time. [image]

And the lead. It will be soaking in water overnight then ready for casting.

Wal-mart of all places, for $34 ea. (Satan’s Lair) He saw them on YouTube with some guy pinging it with .50 BMG ball! It’s 6” I think, could be 8”, about 3/8” thick, and nothing short of true AP will even scratch it. By the time you screw with scrap for a couple hours, weld some ears or mounts on it, you could have just bought something superior for the use. FWIW

Randy told me another place is good for plate targets too. He bought from them, “make it ring targets”. Check them out.

THEY ARE TOTALLY DRY--NO WATER WHATSOEVER OR YOU WILL GET A VERY UNPLEASANT SURPRIZE WHEN THE WATER HITS MOLTEN LEAD.

Bullets like hollow base wadcutters and other JHPs will hold drops of water for days and you will get a nasty explosion when the hot lead reaches that water. Just melt the lead as normal. All the dirt and debris will float to the top and you can skim it off as you melt the lead. Put a marble size piece of candle wax in the pot after it has fully melted. It will smoke like crazy so strike a match and stick it to the lead. it will flare up and burn. Stir it while it is burning, usually 30 seconds or so. During that time all the debris and dirt will float to the top and you can skim it off and throw it away. your lead will be mixed up, clean and ready to cast.

before some new caster thinks he can add wet lead to molten alloy. DO NOT do it you will get an explosion with lead going all over you and everything else, and it only takes one very small drop.

Gary you are correct in that all the dirt will float to the top to be skimmed off. My bank has a lot of caliche in it and it really adheres to the bullet, but being a calcium carbonate it will not go into the mix, but I do like to get the big chunks off and keep it out of my pot.

As far as the tinsel fairy visiting, if even dripping wet lead was added to a cold pot any water will be evaporated way before the lead melts. But if it still bothers you keep the water away from the pot, that would be the best thing.
