Reeder Custom Guns - Has powder coating totally eclipsed paper patching cast?

I have been researching the archaic practice of paper patching again. Irv fed the Monster, with a wonderful book! It is a really cool skill, and if I can manage it certainly anyone can. I've read about bullet size vs "Bore size", not to be confused with the size in relation to "groove" size. Just get paper over the front of the ojive, and it usually works pretty well.

I've not patched very sift lead but want to give it a try for a supreme performing hunting bullet in a rifle caliber handgun.

Ditto on powder coating. Maybe a softer cast, coated, gas checked for top accuracy. Wonder if it can be done and keep a clean barrel? These are limited run, special use projectiles.

powder coating is growing in the casting community. On the CB site you can see it being discussed more and more each day.I will stick to the basic size and lube setup.
As a general rule PC adds about .0015 to a cast bullet.

With great accuracy and no leading. Gary is working on me a 38-40 Carbine now. My plan is to try coated bullets in it as good jacketed bullets that hold up at that velocity are few in 10mm.

in the 321 GNR. Slowly working up the loads but out of a revolver I have reached 1800 fps with no leading and I have a bit to go yet. So far accuracy has been good but not quite to where I want it, so more testing needed. If I can, I will get out tomorrow afternoon and post a range report.

Literally the same as jacketed out of my Martini custom .25-35 WCF. The bullets are "Harbor Freight" red coated FNGC type. I have not noted any leading that I can see and accuracy is holding well. The strangest thing is absolutely no smoke upon firing compared to traditional lubed cast.

I think running a slower powder really helps with not over stressing the alloy too. There is something to that poly coating. Why "red" seems to stick better than other pigments is an odd thing.

way to go. There are some bullets out there that I really like but no gas check types. So I think next week I am going to HF and pick up some to try and roll my own.

less than $20 and a 3# plastic coffee can. I did have a piece of 1/8" grid pet wire to sain the bullets and powder to reuse it. I dump them on the wore and pick it up over newspaper. I made a sort of tray from the 1/8" wire mesh that I can place in the oven, so I don't disturb the coated bullets. The powder is so fine you can sure make a mess. If you could find an easy way to make it adhere to the bullets you'd be golden. As is, static charges are what do it. Good thing is even ugly bullets shoot well. It adds about 0.002 - 0.003" diameter to the bullets to shoot as is (oversize) or resize to suit.

Red is the best and you cannot mix the colors to make a different one. It does not work exactly like that unless you like the work of "Georges Seurat". I made some pink-ish bullets. Hey, I'm a Seurat fan. Randy Barnett is the secret source for the best paint and where to get it.

Montana Bullet Works offers Hi-Tech coating on some of the 40 cal bullets

From all reports that Hi-Tech seems to hold up to jacketed bullet velocities.

But, thanks for the reminder...

my 10mm. Outstanding accuracy, no feeding problems, no leading and lethal as heck on hogs!

bullets 9mm 38/357 45acp 45 colt and they've all worked well.

in hand guns cartridges,and currently many of these are PC.I cast cup points, hps too. Last Jan shot a meat deer at 80 yds with a cast cup point.
I go all the way up to my .358 Win. and have killed deer with them in my .358 My .41 Henry has never shot any thing but PC. Like Jim I do not want garish colors. I use copper penny so it looks like the old WW ammo lublox? or some what like a jacketed bullet. It has changed my casting my lubing.

It did great though and I find it fun and useful. For AK you may remember I wanted a Grizzly Bear protection load for my .440 GNR Encore. The 325 gr. jacketed bullet at 2200 fps was pretty salty but maybe too thin jacketed for Grizz. I paper patched a "jacketed" FMJ .416" bullet bumping it to .430"+ and it shot fine at 1900 fps. That would kill an Elephant! I only made (6) and shot (4) verifying sighting, velocity, and load calculation for my emergency loads.

An old Ross Seyfried article inspired me from G&A back in its golden age.

someone gave me some 45 ACP's that had been powder coated red. Durn things looked like I was loading lipstick into my gun!
