How would a 338gnr in rifle length barrel compare to a 338 win mag ? Just wondering, my next encore barrel will be a 338 gnr, and next rifle will be 338 win

It's closer to the .338-06.

The .338 Win. Mag is a beast, over 4K ft. lbs muzzle energy. The handgun pushing a 200 gr. at 2500 fps can hold it's own. A 250 gr. can be pushed in the Encore pistol to 2300 fps. My .378 GNR pushes the 260 gr. Nosler at a bit under 2300 fps in the 12+2" barrel.

A .338 Mag. rifle does 3000 fps / 200 gr. I think it would be a fantastic African or AK rifle if you can manage it. It does kick a bit more than the .300 Win. that most seem to opt for. To my view the .338 does more than the old .375 H&H can if distance is a factor. A good rifleman can make do with either of course.

I own 338-06, 338 GNR, and 378 GNR. The GNR has the 06 by 150fps with a 200gr bullet and 15" barrel. WBs ballistics for 378 GNR about the same as mine. I am shooting a 250gr Swift A-frame at 2350fps. I love the gun! I Killed 15 of the 16 critters in Africa with the 378 GNR. Use premium bullets with all these handgun and rifle cartridges.

i have to agree with Alcorn. The 338 GNR beats the 338-06

easily. The 405 case hold considerably more powder than the 30-06. On one of my African hunts, in 1995 I believe, I brought the 338 GNR as my only "large" caliber pistol. I took Gemsbok and Kudu with no problem plus Blue Wildebeest and some other like sized game.

Haven’t had a lot of shooting with it but of all the “big” GNR calibers it is a very easy round to load and has shot everything I’ve tried very well! Even the evil commifornia non lead stuff! 15” barrel with brake is the way to go!
