Best STEEL framed 40 out there today?

Step-son wants to get a 40, but doesn't care for alloy or polymer. I am only aware of the Springfield 1911 that comes in .40. Are there other guns? Maybe a Sig P226?
Rock Island 1911 in 40 S&W is awesome...

My son has a 40 baby eagle , sweet shooting pistol but that said it is heavy. I took my concealed carry with it , made fist sized hole in center of target

I have an EAA Witness, CZ-75B, a Browning Hi-power practical; all in .40S&W
All three are full size, steel frame guns.
I like all three of them.
The Witness and the CZ are basically the same gun; grips and magazines are interchangeable.
If you buy a Witness, plan on changing out the recoil spring with a heavier one.
Many years ago, I carried an all-steel Kahr micro MK40 as my carry gun. I rarely carry it these days, but it was a good gun.

did not sell well at all and were greatly discounted. Man I wish I'd bought a bushel basket of them.
I have not personally examined or measured them but I read that the .40 cal. versions had slightly thicker slides adding mass compared to the 9mm versions. Also the .30 Luger versions were thinner, conversely.
I like the feel and shoot-ability of the HP, even if it is only 3/4 JMB designed. It's a good classic gun that has served well. It has it's quirks. I removed the mag disconnect in the first 3 minutes of ownership. The trigger pull takes a master to get right without hammer follow. I also read of a contract security officer who bonked a Mal-content on the noggin with his and had to do a little gunsmithing to get the trigger guard off the trigger so it would function again. lol So not a good pistol whippin' rig. But who can dislike it, it's not the best, but it's good.
Since it was the original vehicle of those adventurous guys in the old glory G&A days, shooting .38-40 180 gr. JHP in cut down and reamed .224 Wby. cases. (I still read it with wide eyes!) It would be a neat semi-auto .40 to have in your collection.

It’s also not very accurate as compared to my Belgian made HP in 9mm. I still like it though. It has a larger thumb safety and better 3 dot sights. I changed the grip panels to slim line, makes a lot of difference. I can’t stand the factory plastic with the thumb rest. I use the same panels on my FM detective.
Most SIG classic .40s are alloy.

adapting 9mm platforms to the round. The original concept was the .40 G&A belted round based upon the .224 Weatherby, in a Browning HP no less!
I really like the old S&W 4006 if you can find a surplus one around. The 4003 was the same with an alloy frame. A personal favorite of mine. It's worth seeking out. The CZ and M75 Clones are likely ones to really check out too.

all the others would be out of business as nobody will admit to have a gun that is less than the best in his mind. It is all in what fits your hand and what you shoot the best. If I had to have a 40, it would be either the Rock Island 1911 or a Hi Power. I am too old to change the way I shoot and a double action is not for me.
I think about half the DA 40s out there are a copy of the CZ 75. Jeff Cooper always said the CZ was the best 9mm on the market. Cooper's Bren Ten in 10mm was pretty much a copy of the CZ. It would be hard to go wrong with one of the CZ clones although they are heavy.
Not to muddy up the water but there is nothing the 40 will do that the new high performance 9mms won't do just as well.

One thing I like about the CZ clones is their ability to be carried cocked & locked, so us old-timers don't have to hassle with double action.
Isn't the 40sw the equivalent of the original 38-40 loads?

in both plain and HP versions. It makes almost a perfect .40 S&W bullet. I also like the custom 200 gr. FPGC at 1000 fps. That's about max. weight for the case and OAL for typical magazines.
They have some very light bullets for the .40 but they are so short they are like flat ended round balls. I'd rather shoot a 9mm if the weights get around 150 gr. or less.
