I have taken several bull elk but all with a handgun

so I am not the best person to ask. Colleen has taken a couple with her 300 Win. mag and i have seen them take 2 or 3 rounds behind the shoulder and run off. The main thing is bullet placement. I would think a point of shoulder shot on a bull elk with a 200 grain bullet would be fine but not really sure the '06 is the best way to go. A big bull elk, especially one in rut can and will take a lot of killing. My advice, for what it's worth is go with the biggest caliber you can shoot well and practice a LOT for that point of shoulder shot, and use the heaviest bullet your gun can shoot accurately.
