Went out hunting this morning with the Ruger SS Bisley in 45 colt. Had Gary a couple of years ago do a grip and performance package on it so it would shoot straight. Walked for about an hour and passed on some other possible bucks, both whitetail and mule deer. Either they were small or the opportunity wasnt right. Finally got the drop on two bucks bedded down and sleeping in the morning sun. The smaller of the two was a bit wary but I was able to amble down the coulee and keep them out of site. I was able to come around the corner and just have the big buck in visual and the smaller one out of site. At about 40 yards I took the shot. The buck tried to stand but faltered. I took another shot and I saw it hit right behind the leg going into the chest heading toward the neck. At that point he gave up, spas-med twice then died. A LOT of blood came out of his mouth and the wound in the chest. Upon inspection I found that the first bullet went high and only grazed him! I dont know if he pulled a hammie or if front legs were still asleep but the first shot definintely shouldnt have slowed him down.
The second shot sure did the trick. I will do an autopsy later and see if I can find the bullet. This is probably the second heaviest deer I have ever shot. Took me an hour to get him 150 yards to a road and 45 minutes just to get him loaded by myself. I know I'm getting old but I had no problem with loading a doe last weekend. If you look at the second pic the garage has 8 foot ceilings to get an idea of perspective.
The amount of internal damage from the GT bullet was truly impressive. I have only seen that kind rupturing from a 22-250 or other high speed round. Never from a pistol round. Further investigation as to penetration will tell how that faired.![[image]](images/uploaded/201911022017455dbde469925f5.jpg)
