I'm always mentally toying with something, any thoughts on solid copper, or brass bullets vs hard cast. Speaking specifically of handgun ammo.

Punch bullets out. I use them for dangerous game as they don't expand at all. The flat or tapered nose helps to break down bones on big animals.

I will give up hunting before I will use a Barnes bullet. A pointed solid will not expand unless it hits a large bone. Every year we get guys talking about hitting deer and elk and losing them due to the Barnes solids. The Game & Fish folks that promote that are all politically motivated. The owners of Barnes bullets are the ones that got all this crap started. There is zero evidence that lead bullets have caused any condors to die. It is all BS.

Its pretty impressive list with what a handgun hunter can choose today with all the different types and maker`s of bullets... Match the bullet to the game your hunting, with accuracy and bullet placement being number one. A little research on your part will let you know what works with what game animals... Best of luck.

you went into a gun/sporting goods store and had MAYBE 2 or 3 choices in ammo for any particular caliber. More often than not your choices were limited to .30-06, .30-.30 and .270. Not anymore, just looking at all the options on the shelves for just one caliber can be confusing, for both rifle and handgun. Its about like a kid in a candy store
for me.

Hard cast, Punch, or expanding. I am loading for 33 calibers. This is a tough decision! A lot depends on the caliber and the game being hunted, of course expansion test and accuracy play a big part in deciding what bullet to use. My friend James from NJ killed a cape buffalo with a Punch bullet form his 50 Wyoming Express, I killed a cape buffalo out of my 416 Taylor with a Swift A-frame, I hope to kill a cape buffalo with a hard cast bullet from my 50 Alaskan next year. They will all work when tested and loaded properly. Shot placement is the most critical factor.

choose your bullet according to the game but bullet placement is the most important thing. On my Cape Buffalo last year I had planned on using the new Hornady DGS (Dangerous Game Solid) but John Abraham, my PH, said to use the expanding bullet, the DGE (Dangerous Game Expanding) and he was right. The Buff dropped with one shot from the 450 GNR at about 55 yards. And I have Alcorn beat on dies. I am loading for almost 90 calibers.
