Reeder Custom Guns - 38-40 Carbine Arrives...

I really should wait and do a full evaluation on the gun. But, a small review seems in order.

First thing I did was slug the bore. I knew Gary waited on the right blank, but needed more info as this will primarily be a cast bullet gun.

Several manufacturers build blanks too big. I've slugged several at .402-.403". This one slugged .3995" and will ideal with cast or jacketed bullets.

I had some loaded ammo using a heavy load of Unique and 200 grn GT Hollow Points. The bullets are sized .402" and seated long. The chamber accepted the .402" shank of the bullet which eliminated another concern.

I fired five rounds into 3/4" at 75 yards the first try. Very satisfied with the accuracy using the Weaver K4 Scope. Velocity was near 1600 fps and not a hint of leading.

Lots went into making this a perfect test rifle.

Will try some of the HiTek Coated Bullets at high velocity in time. I wanted to get the gun and check the throat before I ordered bullets.

Phil Sharpe got 2,200 fps with a 180 grn using 2400 before most, if not all, of us were born.

I honestly believe 2,000+ fps will be easily achieved with H110/296, Lil Gun, 2400, etc.

I bought from Fox Ridge when it was liquidated. Gave $269 for it and really should be examined for not buying more of them.

The gun will certainly be good for our area of the world. I think with the better B.C. of the bullets it will best a 44 Magnum Carbine at extended ranges. Time will tell...

I have shot hot loads in a SBH in excess of 1900 fps and a 240 grain bullet. The Box listed faster than 2K and this was an old 10 1/2" barrel. Nuckle buster on that dadgum trigger gaurd. I would think a 1:18" twist 200 grain 44 mag in a carbine would be as fast as a 35 Remington 200 grain.

The 44 Magnum runs about 1450 in a revolver and 1700 +/- in a Carbine with a 240 grn bullet.

I figure it gives me a minimum 100 fps advantage over jacketed at the same pressures, maybe a bit mroe. I can push a 240 SWCGC at 2150 fps from the 16" Marlin. My normal hunting load is the 310 gr. FNGC at 1800-1900 in both carbine and Encore pistol. The Redhawk drops the 310 gr. to 1500-1550 but it has a long 9-1/2" tube too. All of it will shoot through even a big hog at about any angle.

You know you can seat into the throat on that single shot and do naughty things. It's OK, cause it sure won't fit into anything else.

I shoot the 240 grn XTP Bullets at 2100 fps from my 20" 429 GNR Marlin too.

As Gary as pointed out many times, that neck funnels gases and gives a nozzle effect on velocity.

No way the 38-40 will ever match the 410 GNR or 429 GNR. But, will hang right in there with the 41 Magnum and 44 Magnum.

Glasses are broke and I misread my data and it was 1700 fps from a 10 1/2 inch SBH. Still smokin, No over pressure but to hot and only shot 5 for data.
