Reeder Custom Guns - Interesting discussion...sizing 41cal to 40

Are we talking about jacketed 41cal bullets and if so, do you think they will hold up to +p 10mm auto for hunting? I have a slew of 210gr xtps for my 41mag blkhawk. If I get a 10mm, can I resize some and use them for hogs? Really, do you think they will hold up and penetrate better than the 200gr xtp that’s made for 40cal? I can certainly use hard cast but I see myself as waterboy lite!!!

I'm sizing them down in a Lee .401" Sizer Die. Using only one step now, but feel two steps would be a better plan.

I'll eventually order Custom Lee Dies in .405" and .400" to get perfect sized bullets.

I've shot them thru plyboard and into a dirt mound at 75 yards. They re holding up fairly well for that.

When I get farther into this testing, I'll learn more in sure.

Squeezing them down would make them harder and less likely to expand.

They come out just a tad longer. One of my first projects after setting up will be sizing down some of the Sierra 170 grn HPs. This should make an excellent Whitetail bullet.

From the jacket bond. It’s not going to fall out, and it may very well mash together in expansion. Depends on the manufacturing methods. I remember once sort of extruding the lead core a little out of the jacket. Still shot ok.

The .410 to .401 is about as far as you need to go. Some brands respond differently to the squeeze. Cast bullets get grooves scrubbed sometimes but paint coating no one cares. They all shoot!

velocity of the 41 mag, the 10mm would probably perform just fine at 10mm velocities. Only caution to squeezing down is if there is any spring back to the jacket material and it separates from the lead, not likely but some brands might. I swage my own 10mm from soft lead with a 9mm casing for a jacket. This has been proven by the man who made my dies to expand at 40 s&w velocities and has held up in a 300 win mag opened up to .400 caliber. Real world testing will be your only true answer.
