Gary did ya'll play Neil Diamond in the 60's, 70's?

in Nashville when he had "Girl, You'll be a woman soon" out. He would kneel down at the front of the stage and touch the girls hands and the girlies went apeshit. Diamond never meant to be a singer. He wrote songs and would send a demo tape of him singing the new song to a manager of some singer and tell him it would be a good song for their singer. Someone heard him singing one of his songs on a demo tape and they signed him up. The rest is history.

Goldsboro was/is a great guy. Very quiet, never a braggert. He started his own label and invited all the DJs in Nashville to take a ride on a riverboat. He said "we will drift down the river until we run out of booze" or something to that effect. Here is the invitation from Bobby Goldsboro and his manager Bob Montgomery


I met a lot of "rock" groups on that boat ride that became good friends and most still are (at least the ones that are still alive).. Again all nice guys, even when sober. Goldsboro aimed his stuff at the women and became rich doing so. A couple of his songs went #1 and seemed to stay there forever. We were a kick ass rock station but we pretty much felt obligated to play some of his stuff. The songs often had to do with a child dying or a wife dying and the women loved to cry while listening to it. Especially the song Honey. It stayed at #1 and in the top 5 on Cash Box and billboard forever. I had the morning show and never played his stuff much. I was supposed to wake people up, not get them crying and ruin their day. But the rest of the DJs played his stuff.

Bobby was known as the 5th Beatle and often was called Bobby Goldsbeatle. The Beatles thought a lot of Bobby's music and I heard he sat in on some of the later Beatles sessions.

Talking to bobby on the boat we talked about new records. I jokingly mentioned I was going to put out a record about 3 of my ex wives dying. He laughed and said "seriously, do something that makes the ladies cry, you have your own label and can use the studio anytime you like, so why not?" I thought about that after I sobered up and sat down and wrote a "song" called Rain.

It wasn't a singing type song, more of a talking type song. Within 2 months I had the silly thing written cut and a gazillion records trucked to my door. Rain did very well for me, made a few bucks and made a lot of ladies cry, and I guess that was what i wanted to do anyway. In fact i was introduced to a lady that later became by wife and Kase's mother. She gasped and said "that's you..the Rain song,it was so sad" and started to cry right there. She said she and her girlfriends would sit around their stereo and play the record and cry. Seemed like a big waste of time to me.

I had put out a couple of records before this but they were sick comedy stuff. But Rain was the one I really enjoyed. And that silly ass Bobby Goldsboro was the cause of it all. Back then anyone with a few bucks could start his own record label and put out his own stuff. It didn't mean you were worth a damn, just some personal satisfaction. All in all the 60S AND 70S were a good time to be a DJ in rock radio.
