Christmas meals for Mozambican children

Good afternoon, Misfits! With Gary's blessing, I invite you to share once again in an opportunity for us to share our blessings with the children (and their families) served by Iris Ministries in Mozambique. Last year, many here helped sponsor Christmas meals for over 60 children and their families. Each child received two frozen chickens, 5 kg of rice, a liter of cooking oil, and a couple of liters of fruit juice. While this may not seem like much to us, it represented a literal feast for each family!

I have been in contact once again with Don Kantel of Iris. Don has told me that they have 70 sponsored children this year. To purchase the above food items for each child costs about $30, so the total needed is $2,100. If 70 people sponsored one child each, we would be done. If more is raised than is needed, they will use the surplus to help additional children who are awaiting sponsors through their program.

As was done last year, Don said the money will go straight to the families to purchase the items. He said there are advantages to doing it this way, including that the local people often get a better deal when purchasing items than foreign missionaries do.

Don also said that even more families than we know will be helped, as the poor in Africa always share what they have with others.

VERY IMPORTANT!!!!! DONATION INSTRUCTIONS BELOW!!!!

Here are donation instructions from Don:

ONLINE:

Go to:

https://www.irisglobal.org/giving-center

Scroll down to “IRIS BASE LOCATIONS.” There you can use the drop-down menu to select “MIEZE (Mozambique)” and enter an amount. That then opens a sidebar where you can go to "checkout" to complete the transaction.

BY CHECK OR MONEY ORDER:

Make check/money order to Iris Global and put MIEZE VILLAGE in the memo line:

Iris Global
PO Box 493995
Redding, CA 96049-3995
USA

My family will be giving ten gift baskets. That leaves 60. While you certainly don't need to let anyone know you are participating, it is helpful for us to be able to keep count as people commit to help. I will post periodic updates as to how many baskets are yet needed as people let me know. You are welcome to post here or email me at

Thank you so much for your generosity in years past and considering helping out this year as well!

I have known Don Kantel for quite a long time and worked with him for 6 years when we lived in Mozambique. He was the Iris Missionary in charge of the section that Twyla and I worked in. He is a man of integrity and honesty and I trust him completely.

I also know some of the families the food will be going to and agree with Steve that this is really such a blessing for them!

I will do 5 baskets

At that time we were buying the food and preparing the gifts for the children. Then we had them come to Iris Center in the village of Mieze where we gave them the food.

It's much more efficient the way Don is doing it now.
