What is the advantage of a peep sight vs. the standard sight that came on my Marlin 1895?
For me I can’t focus my eyes on three things

At different distances, no flipping way. An aperture sight helps the situation in a couple ways. As you peer through the circle rear, the eye naturally tends to center the picture. It’s a natural reaction and tendency, automatic. This is akin to bedding the bead in the rear sight, a more conscious effort. The front in a peep sighting arrangement is the biggest conscious effort to position relating to the target. Not only is it faster but for vision hampered a great help. Optics that correct are the only thing better. There is an optical law that crisps up an image when you peer through a hole also! Don’t know why. I really like ghost ring type, a much larger aperture, that affords more field of view and plenty of precision for me out to at least 200 yds.

for me just will not work. I have an astigmatism that prevents me from seeing the front sight. I have to wear corrective lens to be able to see through the peep sight. I have learned to find the front sight (the new fiber sights are great for me) and then the notch in the buckhorn sight. I have three marlins but have put optics on all of them due to the before mentioned astigmatism. WB, the optics of the aperture sight is caused by light diffracting from the edge of the ring of the round aperture. If you are up to getting a good nights sleep, start with looking up Joseph B. Keller's published paper from 1961 on the Geometric Theory of Diffraction and then his paper on the Uniform Theory of Diffraction. LOTS of math etc. and guaranteed to put you to sleep, unless you like to read these papers. BTW, the F117 was based on the the GTD as well as other parts derived from Maxwell's equations. thing on a Marlin is the buckhorn sight. A Marbles is better but I found with my glasses I can focus on both the front sight and the target and the peep is a blur that automatically centers the front sight for me. I a few on rifles and I have two on pistols and they work for me. I prefer scopes and no glasses but a good peep works for me still.
