This may be a dumb question

I'm trying to figure out how to use the 510 trim die to make some 500 gen brass out of 500 linebaugh. I've got the trim die and I using an old rockchucker press. I'm completely lost. I'm sure it's simple enough but I just cant see it .

Do you need the extension piece?

Some trim dies require an extension piece that lifts the shell holder a couple inches. It is available from RCBS (probably Hornday too)and fits between the ram and shellholder, just a universal extension.

I've never tried one of these trim dies. The .510 GNR is just a little shorter than .500 LB, notably shorter than .500 Max. or .50 AK. You can also make .510 from .348 Win. but it needs to be expanded and blown out by firing.

As WB stated, you may or may not

Need a shell holder extension. That is an answer for someone else. As for how to use a file trim die, run the die down until it hits the raised shellholder, then tighten an additional 1/4 turn or more until your press handle has resistance at the end of the stroke when raising the ram. This will take all the slack out of the press and linkage pins thus giving you a press fit for the shell holder against the file trim die.
File what case protrudes out of the die until it is flush with the top of the file trim die.
Remove case and deburr the I.D. and O.D.

Where canning get an extension? Nm

If your die doesn't thread in far enough to make contact with the shellholder as described above, you will need an extension. They are available thru Hornady, already noted.

Remember to go from a 500 Linebaugh to a 510 GNR you will only be trimming off about 1/8", so the case won't be protruding much from the die.

Thanks guys got the extension ordered
