I bought a 338GNR barrel from you recently, and i am new to the contender world, which grip do i need for this barrel? A g1 or g2 or will either work? Thanks

I was thinking the g1 had a better trigger and the g2 was stronger.

Bet the barrel will fit either frame now. But, if you're talking about the frame, then you description is accurate..

The G2 is best for those big boomers for sure. They all can benefit from an action job. But, can be fine tuned as you decide what you want.

Don’t over do it on the G2. I shot one of my .338 GNR Max Encore loads in my G2 and it popped open. The brass busted my lip and bounced off a tooth! Never did find that piece of brass. It was a 200 gr. At 2600 fps! Throttled back a bit for the G1/G2 it’s much better! It kicked the lacy ion from under the locking bolts. A weak bolt spring will do that too.

Great cartridge! We took Black Buck at the Y-O ranch in TX. A memory I will cherish forever!

like the 338 GNR, 350 GNR, 378 GNR and one or two others were developed in the original Contender (G-1). The loads in the red loading manual are for the encore but just drop the loads by 10% and you have the contender load.Like any cartridge start low and work up. But don't go too low or you will get misfires. Just drop 3 or 4 grains and start there.

Think of it as a mini-Encore with dual firing pins (rim fire and center fire, like the G1). The G2 hammer is a better design with a safety in the selector. The grip is different angle on the G2. A Encore stock or grip will fir the G2 BUT there will be a 1/8” gap on each side. It can work in a pinch. The G1 grip and frame is different. The G1 safety mechanism built into the trigger and action can be tricky. Bump it and you must reset the action. The G2 is like the Encore, no tricks.

I’m a huge fan of the late G2, although I have and have owned bunches of G1s.
