Reeder Custom Guns - New Ruger 5.7mm...

Not really my kind of gun. Will be interesting to follow the reviews...

If Ruger does it right, it should be a good one. The FN had all kinds of accuracy problems and magazines were expensive and hard to find. Then the steel core bullets were banned and all kinds of negative stuff cropped up. Since then, 10 or more years ago, most gun companies have shied away from building a gun in 5.7. I do wish that Ruger had given it a different model mane. the model 57 can be real confusing as the S&W great model 57 in 41 Magnum comes to mind when I see model 57. But the younger crowd don't relate to that gun so probably no problem. We are supposed to get one of the new model 57 when they have their early release, which is usually right after the SHOT show, so we shall see.

design and the American guns not having SAAMI specs to go by. The early guns had the chambers too deep by about 30 thou and the brass expanded forward. It really didn't cause any special problems but the brass wasn't reloadable and looked like something was wrong. That problem was eventually taken care of but by that time the 5.7 had a bad reputation.

Look at what Al Goerg, Steve Matthes and others done with revolvers in 22 Hornet, 218 Bee, etc.

I won't write this one off too quickly. Might prove to be an affordable sleeper.

I was told that the 5.7 FN was designed in response for a Personnel Protection Agent to carry into a crowded area so that there would be no over penetration into a crowd when protecting the Principal. I have always wondered why they then started carrying steel (or tungsten I was told) cored bullets if over penetration was a problem. Those would zip right through several people before they began to lose enough velocity to stop in someone...... One shot lots of hits. I have not ever fired one so am not familiar with the accuracy, but I know the magazines were very expensive and the ammo was strictly controlled (at least here in Alabama)so that no hard metal cored bullets were available anyway to test. I'll bet WB could come up with a bullet that would work for testing purposes! Maybe we could make that a challenge for him in 2020....LOL

and that was the reason for the steel core ammo, in theory to go thru ballistic armor. The liberal press jumped on that immediately calling it a "cop killer" round even though no cop was ever shot with it. The ammo was banned from importation and immediately became something everyone had to have, which jacked the prices up. I never heard of it actually being banned by any state but it was banned from being imported so it dried up real quick. Then the rumor came out that the Secret Service that protected the president carried the FN pistol. Whether that was a rumor or actually true I have no idea. But the pistol and ammo had all kinds of negative things going against it and soon faded into oblivion.

Hopefully the new Ruger 57 will clear up a lot of those problems and hopefully the price of the gun and ammo will be reasonable enough for the gun to sell. At the time it was out, the ammo was about twice what the 22 Magnum was so that was one more strike against it.
