Reeder Custom Guns - I shot the .400 GNR a little, forming cases.

I do not have proper dies just yet but I got some working ammo. Still learning things.

My 210 gr. lead SWC ammo and 10 grs. of TrailBoss garnered an average of 1160 fps from the 14" G2. It was accurate and very pleasant to shoot, low blast, and recoil. Power was commendable with it full equal to a good 10mm auto or mid-range .41 Magnum police load.

I only had one 325 gr. round and thought it was also 10.0 gr. TB. Oddly it ran only 875 fps. I'll have to revisit that. I'm not sure what bullet diameter is best for this and will find out before ordering a special bullet sizing die. Most of my .30-30 brass is 0.011-0.012 thick at the neck, same as the round provided with the barrel. I have Win., Rem, F.C. I need to get the dies and do more serious testing.

see what will fully seat. I may be thinking wrong but 0.012 x 2 = 0.024 + (0.400) = 0.424. After a pass through, fully loaded, in a .40 S&W sizer they came out 0.417" and chambered fully. The bullets were re-sized in the brass, wish I'd measured them. I figure 0.393", deducting the case thickness. The re-sizing ironed out all the neck tension, so I re-crimped them.

I really need to get the correct dies and go from there. There is a scientific order to these things and I'm not following it correctly.

eat, sleep and breath calipers and case gauges. When they get a new gun, whether a custom one or a factory gun they take it totally apart, down to the smallest spring or screw and measure each one. One of them compares each small part's thickness, length and weight and compares those parts against the parts from his other guns. One of them called me recently and was all shook up that the sight blade in his single action was supposed to be .024 and his was .019. That difference is a tad bigger than a human hair and he was all freaking out. I told him the same thing I would tell Scottie. Take all those pin gauges, your calipers and any other measuring device, walk slowly to your back door, open the door and throw the damn things as far out in the weeds as you can. Forget all the friggin' precise measurements and just enjoy the damn gun. I think some of these guys make love to their wife with a set of calipers in their hand. Life is just too short....

It was just interesting and seeing what my changes were doing. I had fun shooting it today. The form loads were good and I liked the easy shooting performance.

I was not fussing, just enjoying tinkering. I need to order a bullet sizer and can't figure out what size I will need.

So do you measure from the quick of the toe nail before cutting your toe nails or just cut off what is sticking out past you're toe. Lol buddy

including the neck thickness of the brass case. So I would recommend staying with the proper brass. Scotty just needs to break down and buy the proper dies and quit trying to afro engineer everything. Nobody can expect to get the decent velocity and accuracy by using junk dies and old brass that has been shot a number of times in some other gun.

I was close, but I got to stop screwing around and get real. It looks to be a fun one. The Trail Boss loads were really sweet. I may try a few jacketed to see if the velocity picks up just a little to folks will know. It would be great for any sensitive shooter or for times you didn't need full power. 10 grs. TB is close to full density under the 210 where I seated them, dropped from the measure, not packed.

They all worked good with 400 GNR dies

use .400? I need to special order a bullet sizer die and I'm trying to figure one besides my .401. Maybe .399.

The accuracy for the 230 gr was only ok.

Bullets in that weight range for caliber have really good sectional density. Will make dandy hunting rounds.

Gary gave me a great deal on a .400 barrel that I've been wanting to play with for a while. Thinking I'm a smart boy I jumped the gun making ammo. (I've seen some other Misfits do the same, you know who your are, lol) It had some little issues and I cannot for the life of me figure it out just yet. That's where I was, figuring. I made an adjustment and shot it all up.

I enjoyed even that and found a good forming load with Trail Boss. It is just as powerful as the .41 Magnum revolver at this low level.

I'll get the proper stuff and stop messing around.
