A lot of the pleasure is making something suited to your specific needs for performance. At this point in my life, even with corrective lenses, I struggle. I usually sight my guns so the bullet hit just atop the front sight. Sort of a tight, very tight, 6 O'clock hold. I need to see where the bullet is going to land.
The v-notch with a fiber front or gold bead works well for me IF I don't think about it too long and just shoot. I can out fox myself worrying about the bedding of that bead in the V. It takes a little practice. The fiber or gold bead works pretty well with a plain square notch too. It allows more light on the sides with a round bead over a square post. Several of my platforms I say screw it and slap on an optic. Getting old is OK, just some adjustments to the old equipment.
