nearly a year ago I told the guys that will be joining me
in Africa in May that some of the hunting rules had changed that would effect handgunners. One of the changes was that a hunting handgun had to be at least 8" and had to have a scope on it. About that time a couple of gun writers had hunted Cape Buffalo with short barrel revolvers with no scope. I mentioned this to John Abraham of Madubula Safaris and asked if the scope and long barrel was just a rule in one certain area. He said it was a new rule that affected all of South Africa and would for sure affect us. I have hunted with John in Africa on 14 safaris with #15 coming up in a few months so I know he wasn't just filling me with BS. He mentioned this to the folks that make up the rules and they said they would "look into it". I figured that was as far as it would go. John texted me this morning that an outfitter and PH that let 2 hunters hunt and take Cape Buffalo with semi auto pistols with barrels less than 8" long had been arrested and given their choice of 8 years in a South African jail or a $250,000 fine. He said he would have more info on this in a few days.
