What is your preference for handgun hunting, single action, or double action, or do you let the game and/or situation dictate the choice. For arguments sake lets leave the T/C
single shot out of it.

right hunting with. That is due to a couple of reasons. First it is a total custom and there is only one gun like it and there won't be another. I wanted to build this very special revolver...just because. The second reason is it is in my 410 GNR, one of my favorite calibers. I shot a Central African buffalo, also called the Savannah Buffalo, with the 410 GNR prototype single action years ago. One shot ruined his day. So if I decide to hunt with a double action revolver, it will be this one. It is set up for scope or iron sights which I like. I don't normally like rubber grips but I yanked the slick wood grips off the gun a while after these pics were taken and put some Hogue soft rubber grips on there. Mucho better.

I`ve mostly used single actions but have taken game with double action made by Dan Wesson, S&W, Colt, Taurus and Ruger and there`s nothing like a good single action trigger on a Smith. Those DW`s are nothing to sneeze at either..

Whhat is much more important than action is Caliber.

Never hunted with a double action, shooting it single action. While I do shoot a double action as a single action sometimes, I was taught to shoot a double action as a double action.

my Dad shot everything double action. He shot double action his entire life. At one of the early Shootist Holidays we watched him double action rams at 200 yards.

He worked for the Arizona Dept. of Corrections and got his merit raises on his shooting. He won so many of the Prison shooting matches they asked him not to compete just so someone else would have a chance to win. He asked if he could shoot if he shot left handed only? They said sure. He came in Second place, about 3 seconds behind the winner.

99.99% of the time I cock the hammer SA before shooting. I guess I could make a snap shot DA in a pinch but I do not recall ever doing so. The only exception was as a youth shooting snakes on the move with a High Standard "Longhorn" 9-shot I used. The DA trigger pull almost required two fingers! Something with that HS design.

I use some S&W guns along with a Super Redhawk in .429 GNR and a 10mm GP-100 custom. But as I said I enjoy carrying ammo in HKS speed-loaders (use the .45 Colt for the .454 cased .429 GNR) or on full moon 6-shot clips for the 10mm GP. Always cock the hammer SA. I do like the short hammer fall on most DA.

That said, most of my self defense "carry" guns are DA trigger pull, or Glocks. I like the Kahr line which are simply flat DA guns in my view. I also use the Walther P99-AS and Beretta 92A1 (prefer the SA mode on both). I do practice at 30 yds. with the Kahr and I'm pleased with it, a long very smooth DA pull. It does not stack and feels unique.

I have several double action revolvers, custom Ruger Redhawks, S&W model 29 and 629 but I seldom hunt with them. My hunting handguns are single actions. You mentioned to leave out the TCs, but that is hard to do as 99% of my hunting, here in the states, in Africa, Australia, New Zealand etc, is done with either my G-2 in 41 GNR, or custom Encores in 378 GNR, 416 GNR or 450 GNR. My revolver use is mainly as back up. There are too many occasions where a revolver keeps you from making the shot, for various reasons. I do hunt from time to time with a scoped 410 GNR built on the S&W 629 frame, and a scoped 510 GNR on a single action. But those times are few. My main revolver is an Alaska Hunter in 429 GNR but it is not scoped.

Only Double action is a DW used in single action mode.

how long I will have to get a shot off. I like single action for shots where I have time to get the shot correctly lined up and I like the double action used single action for the same reason. If you are hunting large dangerous game then use whichever you can get into action the fastest and are most comfortable in shooting. Match caliber to the game when you can but if you can't then hit where you aim and aim for a vital spot. JMHO for what its worth.
