Reeder Custom Guns - Reminded of bucket list items

Sure hate to hear of Rush Limbaugh announcing he has stage IV lung cancer. My sister-in-law is a survivor of it, a 95%+ mortality rate past 5 yrs. Everyone is getting older, no one gets out alive. I know some Misfits have been working on their list already. Got me to reflecting.

Name TWO obtainable and reasonable bucket list items. One may be non-gun hunting related but the other must offset that. That might make it more interesting and learn something new of each other. (Once, my father told me he always wanted to learn to SCUBA dive - I was totally shocked - why didn't he ever tell me?)

Myself - I've yet to shoot a bear. I need to consider that and perhaps formulate some active plan. Actually Arkansas has some good 300#+ bears now. I don't see it absolutely has to involve radical travel or expense. It's legal to bait hunt here on private land. Then again, I hear sitting on a lawn chair in Denning's back yard has a high percentage rate of success too. (Yikes!) I also wish to race Vintage Motocross (a 1974 or older bike), to just run with the bulls. I've completed the experience in Observed Trials and Cross-Country so far. I may sit out Road Race, I'm too old and slow reacting, and I heal slow. That is two I might really work on and pull off. A bear with a handgun, and throw some dirt with old (fast) farts.

You learn how to corner correctly, then the road race is pretty safe. I know that you think you know how to “turn” a motorcycle, but most people that ride, don’t.

(Mr. Kocinski, John's father in LR), has some Bultaco Astro short trackers too. I'm talking to a guy tomorrow with a line on Bears in "Snowball" Arkansas. They tear up their deer feeders something terrible. I fancy a powerful single shot for Bear, with scope, for precision. I'm really liking the Reeder full Custom "Reeder's 20" custom .45 Bisley, I'm taking care of for Mr. Taylor. My go to load is a 300 gr. FNGC full of 1680 for 1000 fps. That should do for a hip gun.

handle. I have danced with 3 bears and before the dancing and the kissing each one was shot several times. One with a hot loaded 44 Mag with 265 grain soft point bullets (this was in 1990 so no really big bore handguns then). Six shots with the S&W model 29 and the last 3 were with the gun up against the bears arm pit and has ass on my chest. This one was a hybrid. The Game & Fish said they see this from time to time. A black bear sow in heat and a smaller male grizzly and you have a hybrid. He had the hump on his back, the short nose, teddy bear hears and bad attitude. The only thing not grizzly was the short claws.

The second was a cinnamon bear Colleen had shot out of a big tree with her 338 GNR. He hit the ground like he was dead. I walked up to him, looked at the Cinnamon fur, turned to tell Colleen it was a great bear, turned back to the bear and he was facing me at kissing distance. Six quick shots later from a 41 GNR Redhawk and the bear was down.

Bear #3 was in Alaska. After he got a bit too close a hot loaded 510 GNR rolled him at my feet. He got up and went back by me at about 2 feet and another 510 GNR hit him, so close the scope that was on the 510 and each chamber front were clogged with his blood. And I still had to go in after him. No pic of the bear, just the 510 GNR that took him.

So don't figure 1000 FPS will be fine. It might be, then again it might just piss him off. Get a bear mad and he just might come up that tree for his dessert.

but you are spooking me some. The Glock loaded hot with (15) 10mm/230's might seem a good back up plan. Bears are soooooo sneaky, so quiet. They make NO noise, except Grizz, when they don't care. I'm still a bit wowed about either Sean's or Andy's bear in AK. When he hit it is was like you pushed fast forward on a tape! It was biting at what got him. Had he something else to focus on it would have gotten hairy fast!

and hunting the brown really got the blood moving.... sneaking through alder 'tunnels" that were made buy the brown near the salmon streams and finding their hair stuck to the same alders and not know whats around the bend... Finally shot a small one at an even 50 across the stream but he expired face up in the water....Used the old 454 360gr Corbon flat point penetrator I had for a hippo hunt that fell through. A wet bear looks like shit...that`s him on my wall...Use the biggest most accurate gun you can shoot.Gary is right.... [image] [image]

a high velocity bullet has some added effect. This is from some respected pros I believe. I wonder what's the deal. Many say the .338 Win. is better than the .375 Win. in that respect.

more hydro static shock. That puts the animal into shock and puts him down quicker. George Faerber, out bear guide in Alaska carries a 338 Win. Mag. for that reason. As compared to the 375 H&H, it is faster, flatter and has the shock to ruin the bear's day. He told me he no longer allows the big heavy lead bullets in his camp as they simply don't work as well as the lighter weight bullets. On the bear I shot with the 510 GNR I was trying some really heavy 445 grain bullets a friend who loads commercially loaded for me. He asked me to try them on a bear. The bear was shot twice and both bullets went all the way thru but the bear ran off and I found him in some thick alders a while later. Another of our hunters, also shooting the 510 GNR with the same load hit his bear just behind the shoulder and in the video you could see the bullet exit and hit the water behind the bear. The bear ran off and we never did find him. George said he had had several incidents just like that whereas the slightly lighter weight bullets tended to put the bears down quicker.

Gary, That black bear was around 40 yards and the handload had that 300gr partition running over 1600fps from the 454. High shoulder shot had him bounce on his belly and dead when he hit the ground which is what you are talking about. The partition has a soft lead flat point that opens easy and along with the high velocity and placement made for a quick kill...

I've a couple of friends here in Mena, AR that have taken a couple of blackies with 41's and 44's in carbine and pistol.
That is why my side arm is in they Ultimate 41. The bear load is a WFNHCGC 220 grain.

Hunt.The Howdah you built for me in 50 Special would be my weapon of choice. I have always liked the pics of the.510!

I have regulated the fixed sighted gun to the heavy slug at 1000 fps. It feels really good and you don't have to worry if it's still sighted. I've not shot an animal with "fixed" sighted sixgun yet. I'm tinkering with the .400 GNR now and like the idea of a Bear with the .41 GNR too, a tribute to GNR. But we differ on our choice of bullets, just to keep things interesting.

WB...If you were interested in motorcycle road racing, you ought to consider acquiring a “track bike” and doing a couple track days instead of racing. A great experience on the machine without too many concerns of hyper aggressive riders. I raced starting in my very late 30’s, but the track day experiences were more important to my growth.

I have a 2008 Ducati S4RS and would love to let it eat some on a track under controlled conditions. That may be an idea. All I need are some leathers.

It is addicting...and you’ll never really know your Ducati until you’ve got a new pair of race tires scrubbed in, hot and sticky and cornering until your knee is dragging...
