Reeder Custom Guns - that post about going back in time and you

furnishing your own weapons makes me wonder. If I were to go back in time, what year would I go back to and what weapons would I take with me. And the weapons would have to be weapons of that period in time. So no cowboy with an M-60 machine gun. And limit it to one handgun and one rifle or 2 handguns or 2 rifles along with a knife. So...and this is a hard one. I think I would choose Africa in 1915 and bring along a Winchester or Springfield in 30-06 and a Colt 1911 plus one of my Bowie knives.

So now it's your turn. What year, and what guns would you choose?

A good .22 Magnum bolt action rifle and 5000 rounds of ammo.
For my belt gun my USFA .44 Special single action, 500 rounds of ammo, 2000 Large Pistol Primers, 2 pounds of Bullseye, 50 pounds of lead, the Keith 250 gr. SWC mold, my Lyman 310 Tool and all the dies.

Africa is tempting! I am a Mississippi boy, so the MS delta. A Springfield 30-06 sporter and a S&W triple lock in 44 special. A large folding skinning knife. If I could have 1 more weapon, it would be a 22 LR, preferable a bolt action.

and suitable Bowie knife- Searles style blade.

I debated if I would go the Africa route because as a teen my school library had the 1952 copy of Hunter. The life of John Alexander Hunter who was a game protector and PH in Kenya. I was mesmerized by his exploits.

Or India as in the time of Jim Corbett and the leopard of Rudaprayag. I believe that cat killed something like 400 plus people.

But as I think further, I would like to go back to 1965 or so at the time of Al Goerg and his exploits in Alaska.

I'd go with a Smith and Wesson M29 44 magnum and a Smith and Wesson K22 Masterpiece. Hunt big game with the scoped 44 and small game with the 22. Knife would probably be something like a Kabar Marine corps knife . While I am at it, I'd run with his kit. Light canvas tarp, mummy bag and a few bare items.

to Africa in the midst of WWI, I think I'll wait till he posts me, to join him in the early 1920's. Since the M70 will not show up until 1936, I'm sure he'll make do with a nice Mauser or Enfield! (Did I misunderstand the game?) As for me I'll be interested in doing some prospecting for precious stones and gold. I'll be just ducky with a left over SMLE No.1 MKIII and a nice Colt SAA 7-1/2" in .44 Special. Also a nice 1911 like Gary. If allowed a second rifle I'd hope to find a Rigby Magazine .416 (introduced 1911). A M12 trench gun would be nice too, but out of the criteria.

I've not researched the period but I'd hope to dodge wars, disease, uprisings, and famine. As to a knife I really don't know enough to make a good decision. Perhaps a Marbles model of a medium size with a heavy 6-8" blade and a design for a mix of utility and some skinning. Gary's large Predator looks like it might fill the bill. I'd hate to think of a knife for a defensive tool but I figure it would do nicely. Can I have a week googling and researching before departure?! I know a big rain is coming in 1927. They will have airplanes and relatively reliable cars and motorcycles by then. A nice lightweight single will do nicely, or a Triumph. Hopefully fun adventurous time until that Nazi little jerk begins to muck things up in the mid 1930's. Maybe we can connect Osa and Martin Johnson, Perhaps that little poof John Taylor too. Some interesting folks running around about then.

I highly recommend the DVD's for any lover of travel, Africa, and true historical exotica.

It only took you two paragraphs to answer Gary's question.

Man life was tough in several periods. Writing and reading about disease, death, and despair are not much fun, and so not really recorded as much. The roaring 20's just sounded a bit more "fun".

Where Gary was considering, likely, the time and world politics would matter little.

Would like to go back to go on safary with Teddy with a 1895 in 405 and a S&W new model 3 but would not get it in 38 colt and get it in 44 Russian.
