Things We Don't Talk About

We were in a buddies truck bouncing along when we came upon a big prairie dog town. Dan was in the was in the back seat and rolled down the window. Doug, the driver, rolled his up. Dan took the shot and took out the driver side mirror. It was out a ways for pulling a trailer, but nonetheless, he never lived it down.

Another time I was driving the wifes new car and came across a coyote out in a field. I jumped out with a 308, leaned on the hood and squeezed one off. Got the coyote, but the burn mark on the hood of that white car made it not so worth it.

This year I was hunting from a box blind in a rain storm all day. Not using a pistol but a .270 Winchester and a big buck starts running buy. By the time I got the gun out the right window and was lining up a shot leading him, just before I pulled the trigger a bolt of lightning struck a tree top 20 yards from me. Of course the gun went off and he was truckin about 200 yards away and seemed to be struck and staggered. I looked for that buck for three hours in the dark and rain. That gun shoots better than I do.

Three weeks later, my wife is in the same stand. I had just dropped her off and was headed to my 20 foot ladder stand with my Ultimate 41. I put my foot on the first rung of the stand and Bang! The wife shoots. Cursing under my breath, I text her and asked if she got it. Her reply was "I think so."

So I hike my way back to my Ranger and putt over to her stand and she is on the second shooting lane and I can see blood up to her elbows at 175 yards. When I pull up I said I see you got him. He was missing his left antler. I said where is the other antler? and she replied it was in the briars. I went over to fetch it and it had a fresh mark where a bullet had scraped a quarter of the way through it. I grabbed his front legs to throw him up on the Ranger and I noticed a bullet hole in his ear.

I suspect that it was the deer I staggered in the storm. That was her second buck of the year and second of her life. I created a monster. It was a dandy 8 point and it is going to the taxidermist.

She took it with a rusted up broke model 99A in .243 I restored.

was a viscous giant long tailed ground squirrel sunning its self, across the tail gate perched some what kadywhampass a very strange sound followed the shot from my 10-22, upon inspection my almost brand new truck's no longer shinny tail light lens had a rather odd separation. never fixed it now 14 years later just so's I'd remembers the whampass moment, never did find the squirrel either
