Reeder Custom Guns - Generation gap...

When I was late teen or early 20's I was all into revolvers. Finally I had a bit of money and my wants had waned on S&W from previous comparatively impoverished times, and Ruger finally had actually made the Redhawk available. I did have a 1911 but other than S&W M59 9mm there was not all that much available (interesting) back then in the pre-import days. Cowboy stuff was not as popular either.

Roman got his first full time job, along with school, and just had to buy him a pistol. Of all things he ordered a Desert Eagle .50 AE in Burn Bronze. lol Oh well, he at least has lofty goals. He knows it's limitations but can overlook them enjoying wow factor. Even folks totally ignorant to firearms recognize the iconic piece. He must have thought of it long ago as he came up with a big bag of brass he scammed at HHC! I'm going to let him load his own, buy his own H110, and source bullets. Since it's gas operated cast bullets are not suited as is the Polygonal bore that is a bit more difficult to fill up. Maybe a gas check would help and paint coating? A few would not hurt. I see nominal performance is a 325 gr. at 1400 fps. I'd buy a box of bullets just to see if a painted cast GC at the same loading would pick up 100 fps? That would be satisfying.

I don't try too hard to influence his tastes, who am I anyway? Notions of Custom wheelguns seemingly fall on deaf ears so far. Perhaps that will come with age and time. After all, Pops has all of those sweet rigs he can play with anyway. He thinks he has it all figured out.

Came by a new Stainless Desert Eagle 50 AE. Brady had a fit, so I just gave it to him. We all have our own thing I suppose.

Back in the 90’s we shot “High Power” matches. My sons liked the semiautomatic rifles, i used a bolt gun.
One son had a 1911, the other had a double action Ruger .357, i had a Blackhawk 44. Everyone finds their own thing.

Scott, I just had a 50AE cylinder made for my 500WE by Freedom and must say I was not aware of exactly how powerful a cartridge it is.. Looked at the factory specs on Ballistic 101 and was impressed. The only factory 44 mag load that came close is Garretts 330gr Hammerhead...The 50AE, for someone that does not reload, is a good fifty caliber revolver (BFR makes a single action in 50AE) for someone wanting a big bore....

Should be able to reach 1500 fps. Around 1500 fpe, not bad! No doubt heavier bullets would aggravate the situation some. Still factory ammo at $35/20 is not outrageous for that level, and at least available.

I’m not a big fan of cartoonishly large semi-autos but it’s a pretty refined piece over the years. The Kahr group now owns all that stuff, whatever they call theirselves. Some good looking stuff, neat special things.

Magnum Research that has a 350gr JFP at 1270fps with a ME of 1250ft. pds. and some Underwood 325gr Gold Dot HP`s at 1450fps and 1570ME...Not bad at all...

in 50 AE. One of the gun writers, Gary Paul Johnston I think, did a big article on our Lucifer saying we were the first to put the cartridge in a revolver. We built 50 of the 50 AEs. It was a great handgun as long as you used factory ammo. The Israelis had IMI ammo out in the 50 AE. In the factory ammo at that time the bullet was glued into the case so they didn't need a very strong taper crimp. But handloading was another thing. To put a real good taper crimp on it to keep the bullet from jumping the case it was easy to do too much of a crimp and the whole round drop too far into the cylinder, not catching on the inner lip that it headspaces on. In all the Lucifer's we built in Florida and a couple out here, I have never seen one on the used market.

Your 50AE Lucifer must have been a real "ass kicker"..... Never seeing one on the used gun market say`s plenty...

Along the way he dabbled with a Colt New Frontier in 44-40 along with a couple of custom 44-40 Ruger revolvers.

In the late 80s we were building a lot of custom XP-100s. his was one in 7-08 Improved.

Along the way he even got into a BAR in 416 Taylor.

In semi auto handguns by the time he was 13 he was a big fan of the Grizzly in 45 Magnum. He went to the Grizzly in 50 AE for a while but didn't like that. We both tried the Wildey pistols but that didn't take long to get our fill of them and dump them. I was always into the Auto Mags, mostly the 41 Auto Mag but also the 44, never really got infatuated by the 357 Auto Mag. Kase never got into the Auto Mags, instead staying with the Grizzly.In the early 90s we were friends with Seth Wesson, the son of Dan Wesson and we tried all the new 445 Dan Wessons that Seth sent us. Kase liked the 8" stainless 445 and put a scope on it. He stayed with that and still has it today.

After moving away from his Contender in 30 Herrett he found the 378 GNR in the encore and that was and still is his baby.

And all this doesn't take into account his love affair with big caliber rifles like the 416 Rigby, 470 Nitro, 450 Watts Magnum, 450 KNR in a Ruger #1 in his own caliber and more in his trips to Africa. Nor does it touch on his combat shooting with an AMT Longslide 45 ACP and a custom 38 Super I built for him along with one just like it for Colleen. So he has pretty much tried just about everything in handguns and rifles.

I used the Hornady 270 gr. SP in .378 GNR TC to shoot this nice conservation Whitetail at 100 yds. It showed evidence of text book expansion on the smaller critter, I had no complaints.

Will be fun to shoot! Maybe he can try it out on something at the HHC. Would be nice to have a companion revolver to go with it, maybe like the Ultimate Backup.
