Police Firearms Instructor - Fatal Firearms Accident

Of carry. I’ll take shooting myself grazingly in the ass any day over sweeping my groin. I’m just not comfortable with it. My last CCW instructor basically told me I was not cool for not taking his suggestion for that type of carry as the solution to all. Piss on him! The gun discharged because the trigger was pulled fully to the rear releasing all safety devices and finally the seat and striker, period! It could have been a finger, fumbling thumb, or wad of shirttail in the triggerguard. So many things can go sideways and complacency kills! It can happen to anyone in the blink of an eye. I really try to impress that on young shooters who already know it all.

I infer from WB's post that the instructor was using a cross draw with a Glock or other striker fired weapon and shot himself in the femoral artery. I read several years ago of an LEO that shot himself in the side when he inserted his Glock into his holster. Apparently the holster was leather and over time had started to collapse. The leather flap caught in the trigger and depressed it disengaging the safety and allowing the weapon to fire. Fortunately he got out with only being wounded in the side and outside leg. He was still alive to give testimony to checking your carry holster from time to time to see if it needs to be replaced.
