Square Deal

Bought a used Dillon Square Deal from Gary a week or so ago. Got it up and running. It needed some parts and cleaning but works like a champ.
It looks like whoever had it was a little confused, had it setup with .38 dies in 9mm toolhead, 9mm shellplate and the failsafe rod rigged to dump powder no matter if there was a case in that spot. The .38 sizing die was chewed up but Dillon sent a replacement. Few other small parts which about half of were no charge and a good cleaning/lube and it’s back in business.
I’ve loaded 200 each of 9mm, .38 Special, and .44 Special.
I like the press. Will probably use it for 9mm and pickup a setup for .45 acp. I have a 550B, not auto indexing, but affords a little more room to work and better die options. The auto indexing took a little getting used to. Easy to lose track of where things are at when getting everything dialed in.

the late 80s. Coughs along like it was new!

Cool. I've been thinking of a Square Deal B

for 9mm only. Are you priming with the press or doing that separate? I was actually thinking 550 prior to your post. Do you like the square deal or 550 better. Thanks!

I’m priming on the press. It’s at the 2nd station which is also flaring/charging. If I could only have one I would go with 550. More versatile, more room for fingers to work, and more calibers. A lot of the dies I use on the 550 are regular Horanady dies that I had for my single stage, so that helps on cost.
Having both, the Square Deal is perfect for 9mm.

Thanks for the info!

I bought my Dillon 550 back in 1983 has manual indexing never cared for the auto ones. Now you have the auto square deal. Do you like auto index or manual?.

Don’t get me wrong though auto is nice but I don’t think you gain any noticeable speed. I’m fairly slow anyway.
