They caught it on limb lines. Kudos for having the balls to get it in the boat to photo. You can't eat them in AR, maybe some other variety (Loggerhead?) but not Alligator Snappers.
We used limb lines as well.

Ages ago I had some friends that would use a long pole gaff. They would take a canoe into the many bogs that dot New England and look for a trail of bubbles.
Thrust the gaff down and get a hold of a live snapper. Fun. Especially in a canoe.
