and have it where you can get to it quick. I like a crossdraw holster and normally I carry my 510 GNR with the hottest load I can shoot quick when in bear country. That is usually a 350-400 grain at 1300 fps. Anything over that slows my second shot down a lot.
The largest you can apply accurately.

Much like Gary Said.
Whatever that may be, combined with a proper bullet. Placed where it counts and done so repeatedly with rapidity if necessary.
It matters not if it is a 357. It must be done so in the aforementioned manner. If you can shoot bigger the same way, great.
Remember that shooting well is a perishable skill. So PRACITCE. However, don't get hung up on size or power.

and each one with a different caliber and none put the bear down with one shot. They were 44 magnum (on 2 bears), 41 GNR and 510 GNR. The 44 Magnums took most of a cylinder full, the 41 GNR 5 rounds and the 510 GNR 2 rounds. So really I don't think there is a standard hand held handgun that will put a pissed off bear down with one shot. I am sure there are occasions where one shot has but it wasn't with this Tennessee boy behind the trigger.
.510 GNR 350-400 gr. at 1200+ fps

And a 12 ga. Pump 8-9 shots with hard metal slugs. My .416 rifle is much preferred.

I primarily carry a 22lr pistol. I have moose in my driveway, bears in the area, had a lynx in my yard. And have an ongoing war with the tree rats
