Last weeks rabbit story
Was out terrorizing rabbits with 4 dogs when i heard the brown one (Fox is his name) bark. Not the usual yip, yip, yip I’m chasing a rabbit bark, but a real bark, which usually means “rattlesnake”. I was on the other side of a rise, about 200 or so yards away, and couldn’t see anything. Then i could hear a loud yipe and could picture a rattlesnake sinking his fangs into Fox, who hates snakes. Then i could hear what sounded like a dog fight, and another loud yipe. I headed the direction of the sound as fast as this fat 63 (and a half) year old could travel wearing a pack (with dog water) and a 9mm on each hip. At this time i thought it was my dogs fighting each other due to confusion with a snake, but as i cleared the rise, and could finally see over the brush, i could see the fight. The 3 male dogs were on the coyote, 2 behind him, and one being chased by the coyote. The 2 behind would bite the coyotes butt and it would run to a bush and stop, pick out one of the dogs and go after it, and the other 2 would bite its butt. This was going on from bush to bush where there would be a pause for a second or two and then go again. When i got to within 50 yards, my German Shorthair, who was still looking in bushes for rabbits (she doesn’t care about other dogs or dog fights) sees me, and where I’m going, and sees the coyote, now she is in the ruckus.
While i was watching the fight, I noticed the coyote did not try to run away. It never went for open space, it always chose a single dog, and went after which ever one it decided on.
I tried to get ahead of the fight, but they kept changing directions, so it took a few bushes for me to be in the right place, but it finally happened. They stopped at a bush, now with 4 dogs there was no open spot for the coyote to run. One dog in front of the coyote, 2 dogs behind, me with a broadside shot and my German Shorthair in front of my left leg.
I only had rabbit bullets in the Glock 48 which consisted of powder coated 88 grain hollow points driven around 1300fps. These bullets expand on rabbits that are 120+ yards away,,,,kinda light for coyote at 2 steps away. So, i aimed behind the shoulder and decided i would keep shooting until the magazine was empty, or the coyote dropped. This all happened in a second or so, and i started shooting. At the second shot i saw the dirt flying behind the coyote and the next shot or 2 the coyote turned to bite where i was
shooting, which made the dogs start to move, so i stopped shooting after 6 shots. The coyote took 2 steps forward, which made all of us move with it, then just stood there, and i watched its eyes fade, and it fell over dead.
I’m not a writer, and don’t have many stories like this, so i hope it didn’t bore you too much. We usually just terrorize rabbits,,,,,
