I'm sitting on about 33 cases of 12 gauge and another 11 or so of 20 gauge and down to 7 cases of 410. I get reclaimed shot thru my local gun club for 32 a bag, it is running about 48 at the local retail stores.
Yeah I was shocked that it was over $50 around here

It has been a good while since I had bought any. Of course shipping must be murder $$$. I have been looking at cheaper .410 doubles again. The Stevens and CZ Turkish lines. The Stevens O/U looks good for the money.
I have a MEC and .410 dies. It would make that shot go a lot farther. Then again I load 3/4 oz. 12 ga. loads with 17.5 gr. Red Dot. I was missing everything and kicking myself silly with my buddies shooting clean runs in Skeet using 28 and .410. My 12 bore with 3/4 oz. and IC or Skeet choke made up for a lot of poor shooting. I always loved a pump but finally have to admit as quick as I was with a slide gun I was working hard at it. Too easy to pick up the loaner 1100 and just pull the trigger.
410 loads. we shoot 1/2 oz of #8 or #9

shot thru a 2 1/2 in shell. If you are increasing the range just use a tighter choke, I normally shoot a light mod around 17 thous. Usually shooting sporting so the range is a little greater than skeet. For 12 guage work I shoot a lot of 7/8 oz in front of titewad powder, a very mild recoil and good speed. Using #8 shot it will break a clay from the 27 yd line. We aee shooting a imp mod (23 thous) from that distance. Of course every gun has something it likes best for the right combo.
Folks piss on the .410 but it has the same power as as 10 ga

As far as individual pellet speed. The problem is twofold I think. First obviously there are not as many pellets. But to add insult to injury those fewer projectiles are forced down a smaller bore. This makes the shot column longer, exposing more pellets to the sidewalls of the bore then constriction in the choke. This can flat spot individual pellets and make them fly untrue, hampering their ballistic qualities.
The .410 is derived from the .44 WCF "shotshells" or what we would call rat or snake shot. But it works. My .510 GNR revolver shot loads ran 1500 fps for the 1/2 oz. charge! That's a pretty good hit up close, but the revolver and rifled bore really works over those pellets.
Thats why they make a 28ga......
