Had a strange experience today

Hello All:

I decided to do some trout fishing early in the morning so the decision was made to go to the club trout pond. I just needed to get out of the house. The passing of Mom as well as all of this Corona pandemic issue has been getting on my nerves. I needed some fresh air and to just get out of the house.

After an unsuccessful session of fishing for trout I made the decision to check a trail camera I have set up near a tree stand site. I have seen some wild turkey and figured I would like to see what is around there. It might be a good spot to go if other places are out of the picture for wild turkey season.

My stand is near a large hemlock evergreen swamp. I have seen deer and it is a nice go to spot in a pinch. You need to walk through some laurels and the it opens up to the swamp area.

As I crossed into the swamp area and then something caught my eye to the left of me.

It was a large fisher or as well call in our area fisher cat. The thing jumped and then stared at me. As a rule I have seen fishers run off in the woods when they have seen me. This one was different. It was very large with a whitish face and it seemed to not fear man.

Something said this wasn't good. At that moment I made the decision to take out my Ruger SS with the 22 WRM cylinder in place. I carry Hornady's 45 grain FTX ammunition in it. It shoots well and I figure it gives me an edge with the 22 WRM.

I knew that the animal was out of season but I figured a shot near it would scare it off. I aimed to the left of the animals head and squeezed the trigger. BAM

The shot went into a large white pine tree. The fisher jumped and made two lopes to the front and rear. Then it stared back at me.

What is going on here? Why did this animal not run off. I have seen the run off in the past but not this time. So I made another shot near it's head. Again it jumped and ran off but then turned around and looked back at me.

This is odd. At least it is running off but something said this thing could turn on me. I took another shot near it's head. BAM

Then it took off for good headed towards the brook. I know some may laugh but the fisher is a large member of the weasel family and I know a while back someone in Connecticut was attacked by one. They can do some damage. I do not want to get bit and clawed up by one of these things.

I decided at that point I needed to load up and check the trail camera.

Some may laugh at me carrying a gun all the time in the woods but this is a case when I was glad to do so. I love that little Ruger Single Six that Gary reworked. It is a special gun that shoots exceptionally well.

Glad you mentioned what a 'fisher' was... did you

can almost always hear the bullet hit but don't hear the shot.

If that had been rabid it could have messed you up

beautiful animals, I've also seen a few in Eastern CT, only in winter though.

This was the only one that seemed curious or fearless of me. I think I surprised it but I did not want to take chances. They can rip you up a bit.

Better safe than sorry.

Just as Gary mentioned. It was a "pop"

Fisher can tear you up. I have trapped them in the past and they have nasty claws.

ALWAYS CARRYING A GUN IN THE WOODS IS NOT GOOD;

IT SHOULD BE ALWAYS CARRYING A GUN PERIOD!

When are these critters in season John?

Do folks hunt them for their fur in your whereabouts? Thanks.

There is a November trapping season

for these animals.

In Massachusetts you cannot use conibear ( beaver only with a town permit for a registered complaint) or leg hold traps.

So you have to use a cage trap. I have caught them in the past. I found pheasant heads are a great bait.

If this animal was attacking or damaging your livestock you can shoot it. I chose not to but a lot of people in small towns follow SSS.

Rabies was the 1st thing that I thought of.

I would almost bet money that it was rabid. Just like seeing a skunk in the daytime-99.99999% chance it's rabid & should be put down immediately.
