I have my dad's old M17 8-3/8" S&W

I didn't like it when he bought it around 1980. Too stinking long, I had the 6" with three "T's". Dad got the plain 17, it was just his thinking. He did put Target stocks on that felt better to him. It's great for deliberate firing and target plinking but horrific to carry, usually a shoulder rig is needed. That's usually not convenient to me.

I'm kind of sad shooting it so I seldom do. The kids are not really interested in it, yet. I don't really want or need to sell it. Most research shows a fair market to be $750-800, stuff is high. One guy has them priced at $1695! I'm really wondering if he knows something I don't and should hold tight on it for sure. Being sentimental is so stupid and superficial but I've fought with it all my life. Doug is my inspiration, he throws everything aside for the new. My hero.

I bought a 6" barrel to screw on there and transition it to something I found more useful. But now I found a 4" barrel I'm considering. I'd REALLY like to find a "full lug" S&W factory barrel to screw on there and fit.

How rare is a 4" M17? I remember seeing the M48 in a 4" but not many 17's.

I believe the Model 18 was more common in 4”

I never really understood the existence of the 17/18 and the 14/15. All basically the same gun. Just different barrel lengths.

I’m the only one alive that has an emotional attachment to that long barrel S&W. Scoping it might be it’s salvation!

the 18 only came in a 4". I had heard it came about

for law enforcement to train with as they carried the model 19, for all practical purposes the same gun. But the 18 only came in a 4" barrel.

STILL ONE OF THE BEST, THE BEST?,

out here we have the Aberts squirrels that

are also called the Kaibab squirrels and are about the size of a house cat and they get way up in the top of the Ponderosa Pines and bark at you. It pretty much takes a good 22 Magnum to knock them down. Sometimes a 22 LR will hit them but then they die laying flat on a big limb. The 22 Magnum has enough punch to get them out of the tree.

Dang Scotty leave it alone for a range gun. I'm sure

it's a magic wand at the range! Besides, don't you have Dad's stainless J frame for a carry 22? My best revolver is an 8 3/8 M27 with Standard Hammer Standard Trigger and Magnas. Would you really carry it if it had a 4" barrel?

I have sentimental guns that I will

Keep. If they are not useful make it into one that is. Keep the old parts for someone to throw out after I'm dead.
Got grandpa's shotgun;
stories about it came along too. Was useless to use for me as it was. Mauser Geha 12ga, but solid. New Shaw rifled barrel, Boyd's stock, Leupold scope and more. Transformed into a keeper. Shot many deer and won some turkey shoots. Added more stories. I'll pass it on to my son.

changing barrels on that M-17. I have 2 of the 6" guns and have been looking for an 8" gun forever to scope for small game. I have a matching 6" in 22 Magnum. Also scoped for small game hunting.

I had 2 Colt Troopers in 22 Magnum that I could never get to group at all, even after putting a scope on them, so they went down the road.

I am real partial to scoped 22 caliber handguns. Here are a couple.

The Ruger is a bit different in that it has an 8" heavy AMT barrel on it.

that would be an ideal idea to scope it with a classic Leupold set up 4X or maybe find a Burris in that fantastic 3x. Not a real expensive project. Like I need another one.

If I could find a factory full lug take off I'd sure be tempted. The 6" extra barrel I have is a little too common for my interest. Dad's gone and I'm what's left. I'm making special memories for the pieces the kids shoot and enjoy. I can't see the sights hardly anymore but if I shoot irons the 8-3/8" gives me an advantage. Strangely the longer barrel gives very little if any ballistic advantage over a 6". It's not worth the extra hanging out there.
