If you were interested in buying a 30-30 levergun, would you buy new or look for a used one? I am not talking about a safe queen, but something you would use hard. Of the new offerings, what are your experiences? Winchester, Marlin, Henry, Mossberg, etc. What got me thinking about this was Winchester's ads about their new guns being more similar to pre-64 models and the fact that my experience with the Japanese built firearms has been good. Are new leverguns better than the old ones?
If I was buying it would be used because

I'd want to send in to Gary for rechambering, action work and chromex
I never met a "bad" lever action yet and I have many brands.

here in North Alabama for a while now. I wanted a new one but have only found a few used ones that have been used hard. I have three Marlins now and would like an intermediate cartridge like the 30-30. I have 45-70, 44 mag and a 22 so for me at least I want a Marlin.

Have several Winchesters and Marlins early 1900s have a few build in the 40s and some built in the 80s. Bought a new Marlin that was made by Remy a year ago it’s just as good of gun as any of the rest, I like it better because it has a bigger loop my hands are bigger and I can wear gloves with it, it shoots just fine. I’ve shot 100’s of rounds through it already good gun. Some of the loops I have on my Winchesters are John Wayne levers they look cool but they’re too big to be functional for me. Have a couple of Rossi's one in 454 Casull and one and 45 colt they’re good lever guns to.
the lever action 30-30s are sorta like 44 mag

revolvers. One is super slick (the Smith) and the other is super strong (the Redhawk). The Winchester is, to me, the slick racehorse, while the Marlin is the strong work horse. So it is according to what you want.
I have only had two-- a marlin and a HENRY

Of course if you don't I'd certainly stick to what you can get at most gun stores. Ditto any you may find in .32-20 or even .25-20. Unlikely any new ones other than odd foreign made single shots.
Skeeter did a controversial article once that ruffled some feathers of even the faithful. Those that did not read past the title and first paragraph. I remembered his perspective and see his argument. He proclaimed some cherished calibers obsolete, no longer needed. Plus things were different back in the 70's. Availability sparse and no internet back then.
Guess I like tough. Rugers and Marlins I have a lot of.

The Savage 1899 is a real nice rifle. I got a hold of one for 99 bucks and refurbished it. It’s sweet shooter. They all get the job done. I prefer kit 30-30 and 35 Remingtons with a gold trigger. But marlin built plenty for the old school big box stores back in the day. Glenfields go for a premium price.
Used Marlin .30-30s

Are easy to come by and even and excellent shape are quite reasonably priced.
I'd buy a new Marlin stainless carbine or XLR.

Thanks
