It uses the sabot to achieve higher velocities and to protect the rifling from being torn up by the tungsten carbide projectile. Nasty things...will penetrate .75 inch of steel armor at 1,500 yards.

and it was called armor piercing we loaded it in the A-10 along with HEI (high incendiary explosive) it spawls its way through or burn/melt its way through and TP target practice rounds were mixed in. We used that combo in the gulf war. All three together and no more tank.
