Big bore cartridge recommendations

Hi all,

I’ve recently acquired an Ultimate Black Widow in 44 Mag, and I’m enamored with the pistol. I’ve since gotten the itch to go with a larger cartridge revolver. I’m thinking that I would like to go with a 50 caliber cartridge, but I’m open to suggestions and would appreciate feedback from those more experienced in big bore revolvers.

I’m not a hunter, and likely won’t ever take large game with this revolver, but I do love punching paper. I was originally thinking of 500 JRH, but that’s not a Reeder option, so I’m now thinking 475 linebaugh, 500 S&W or 500 linebaugh. I’m also open to GNR wildcats if there is a compelling argument. I’m leaning toward the 475 linebaugh or the 500 S&W, as I understand bullet selection to be a bit more prevalent. I do handload, but I am interested in finding a cost effective (relatively speaking) platform to shoot.

Thanks all for reading and I appreciate any thoughts on the matter.

Did you get the Black Widow that was on GB last week? Hope so, beautiful, perfect pistol. I almost bid on that myself.
For bigger Reeder revolver cartridges and a full custom gun, look at the 510GNR.
For bigger bore guns on a budget, there's the Magnum Research BFR in 475 or 500 LB, those could benefit from Gary's Positive Performance Package.
Ruger Bisley Super Black Hawk in 480 Ruger is another good option.
If the UBW is your first Reeder gun, welcome to the club!

Gary just finished this UBW too.

.510 and .480 calibers

I find the .510 and .480 calibers the best. Lower pressures keep the recoil down. The .480 is the best bang for your buck. A semi custom .480 is probably all that is needed.

and think GNR cartridges, may I suggest the 501 GNR, maybe add a second cylinder in 500 SPCL. Brass for 500L or 500 SPCL (easy), .500” bullets may have better availability with a wider variety, I think (with the 3 greatest factors in real estate ... location, location, location) but everybodies milage varies in life.

Here are my thoughts on other calber options

For paper punching, anything more than a 44mag is a waste...

I mean....just what would the point be? Seeing a larger hole in the paper? If that's the case, shoot a bunch of .22's for a while..then bring out the 44 and admire the larger holes. Powerwise, that UBW is a 5 shot so that's a whole lotta power capability even if you don't reload, with whats available on the ammo market today. Garrett 340gr superhard cast at around 1450fps....take down an elephant with that if you wanted to. Sorry if I'm different, but if I wanted another custom revolver for paper punching I would choose something smaller so I could really enjoy punching lots of paper with many more shots....maybe something like a 357mag, 32-20, or in the GNR realm a 356GNR. I know, its a terrible thing to be logical but thats my opinion on the matter. BTW, I think the 38 Special is one of the most popular center-fire paperpunching cartridges ever..for good reasons.

I own 40 hunting handguns. 2 44 specials,, 4 44 mags, 4 45 colts, 2 475 Linebaugh, 1 457 GNR and others. If you want true power go with an Encore in something like 450 GNR, 416 Taylor, or 50 Alaskan. In revolvers for hunting only the 457 GNR has little equal, but is very limited in versatility. Of the cartridges mentioned a 5 shot 45 Colt is hard to beat. 1440 fps with a 335 gr. bullet or 750 fps with 250 gr. bullet. Make the gun and load fit the game.

I’m a fan of Gary’s .455GNR!

Strause a few minutes ago about this. We have 70 different wildcat calibers to choose from. It is hard to say one is better than another, but I do have my favorites. These are not necessarily the best, just ones that I have used a lot since day one.
In my G-2 the 41 GNR has been my favorite for years, first on the Contender and then on the G-2. Many large animals taken with it. My second favorite cartridge for the G2 is the 356 GNR. I have taken big critters like Bison and Nilgai with it.
In the Encore my 416 GNR and 450 GNR are tops of the list. The 450 GNR has taken a lot of big and dangerous game for me, like my Cape Buffalo and a few more like that. The 416 is a favorite as it has the punch of the 450 but with the 350 grain pointed bullet it is good for longer ranges.
In a revolver my 429 GNR is my go to cartridge. I have carried it all over the world and it has never let me down. My 410 GNR would be a close second in popularity in a revolver. Took an African Savannah buffalo with it years ago, one shot.
There are a lot of others that are just as good but those are the ones I pack when I am going hunting.

Woody,

Thanks for your message. You are absolutely correct - there is little point to punching larger holes in paper. That being said, I just can't help but enjoy the power and the feeling of shooting a big bore revolver.

You might be right - perhaps I should purchase a single-ten and give myself a little perspective to work from!

I do reload, and am really excited to start pushing this 44 ultimate black widow.

Dang you and your logic. I'll consider the options you suggest and give my intellect a chance to win this argument over my heart!

Lower pressure rounds

Saturday, May 02, 2020, 21:52 (2300 days ago) @ jfo4

Thanks for your post Jason. I do think I prefer the recoil response of a lower pressure round.

I say this as though I have seasoned experience with big bore revolvers of all shapes and sizes, which isn't true - but the 454 I shot (a Redhawk Alaskan) and even the ported and compensated 460 S&W I shot had a 'sharp' recoil response if that makes sense.

I did purchase that Black Widow! I couldn't pass it up. I was planning on buying a BFR in 44mag, with the new 6 shot cylinder, but this pistol checked all the boxes I was looking for and is quite the looker to boot! I'm happy I snagged it, but you can rest assured it found a good home!

This is my first Reeder, and I must say this is impressive. I also have a 44 mag vaquero with a birdshead grip that I'm now thinking of sending in for the positive performance package as well.

Right now I'm thinking of going with a full custom Reeder and picking it out how I like it. I do like the idea of going with either the 475LB, or 500S&W as it does leave some room to add a "special" version down the road with 480 Ruger or 500 JRH in a bisley or BFR sometime down the road.

Thanks for your reply!

The 500 S&W is you’re most versatile option. It can be loaded down to a very comfortable plinker or loaded hotter than any of the other cartridges. Bullet selection is far better with a huge range of bullet weights available and brass is easy to find. The BFR and X frame are both capable and affordable platforms.

I guess for many of us on this forum it was the best and easiest option in the 50', 60's and 70's. I had a 454 Casull for about a week, just too much bang and recoil for me. Just had Gary build me a 445 SM Contender carbine barrel to use on a Bison, i did it instead of another caliber because it will also shoot 44 Magnum.

Gary Reeder
[subject]
Friday, May 01, 2020, 11:32 (2302 days ago) @ Kiel

as you mentioned. The 500 S&W is a stretch frame revolver, while the other 2 cartridges are standard frame revolvers. You can't put a standard size cylinder in a stretch frame and expect any accuracy.

Now that most everybody has had their say I would recommend the 500 Linebaugh or the 510 GNR. Either will do anything the 500 S&W will do and do it in a smaller more compact package plus you can easily add extra cylinders in other calibers. Extra cylinders are not as "convenient" as one would think. Every time you change cylinders you have to re-sight the gun in which is a pain for most and expensive in the waste of ammo. If you want to stay with the .500 caliber, the 500 GNR or 501 GNR will do anything the other 2 you mentioned.

It is your ballgame but going with the 500 S&W is very limiting in what you can do with it. A round that lives in a standard frame revolver is much more user friendly.

I appreciate you chiming in with your thoughts on the matter. I'm an admitted newcomer to big bore revolvers beyond 44 mag, and I'm new to the world of your fine firearms as well.

What I meant to say in my previous post was that I would like to have a "special" caliber available for reloading purposes. I was thinking I could go with another pistol down the road, and use the same caliber bullet.

I was thinking a 475LB would be complemented easily with 480 Ruger, while a 500 S&W would be easily complemented by a 500 special.

I'm less familiar with the 510 caliber, and I'm learning as I go here. The negatives I've heard so far is that the jacketed bullet selection is less diverse than it is on 500 caliber.

I've looked, but maybe not in the right place - what is the difference between the 500 GNR and the 501 GNR?

Regardless, I'm hearing what you're saying about the 500 S&W being unwieldy.

what forum you are on. Gary has his stretch frame that can be customized however you like and extra cylinders can be added easily. And it doesn't weigh a ton like the X frame and it is not rough as a cob like the BFR. Plus it is a full custom, built the way I want it, which means a lot to me. I have 3 of Reeder's guns.

can see from the replies there are many opinions and LOTS of experience from a variety of handgun hunters. I have shot all of the cartridges mentioned and at the age of 75 am finding that the recoil is becoming an issue with me because of arthritis in my hands and fingers. I do have a Reeder 510 Hunter that I have carried for many years in the field in Alaska. I shoot both the short and long GNR 510 rounds and have killed hogs with both. The short round doesn't kick quite as much and the long has a little more with a little more punch. A day at the range and about 25 rounds or so is all I can handle. I don't know if that is an issue with you but it should be considered. I shoot the 350 grain loads S & L from Gary's reloading manual. The bullets can be found at Montana Bullet Works. They are really great people there and can get you the bullets you want or you can do like several on here do and cast your own. The people on here that cast can give you a lot of information even if you are experienced in casting. I have 475 LB in an Encore and brother that sucker kicks! Not many of those and I call it quits. BUT, for a hunter it will knock down anything you are liable to encounter. For paper cutting not so much. Good luck in whatever your decision is and once again welcome.

I noticed down below here there was a question about the accuracy of the 45 and 454 and the answer was not as good as expected or something along those lines. It could also be that they feel if they are going for one of the big boys, might as well go for the biggest. Not sure. but we get maybe 1 order for a 460 for every 30 orders for the 500.

paper with big bore, wrist wrenching, filling jarring handguns, but personally I don't see the need for the abuse you will receive. I know you need to stay proficient with it, but for for just plain, inexpensive fun for a day a .22 is hard to eat. I have a .454 and after 3-4 cylinders full I'm ready for the .22.

The .510" bullets are limited in jacketed options, cast are available but not as many in 350 gr. and less, best suited to revolvers. The brass is also expensive, and you did mention economy. Rather oxymoronic with big bores.

The .500" cal. guns have a wide array of bullets in all styles available and brass is a little easier to fine. Still not inexpensive but more available. I like the idea of a shorter, .500 LB length, true .50 wheelgun. The .500 S&W is too much for me unless you just want one.

For me I really liked the .475 LB, also shoots .480 Ruger. Lots of bullet options galore, brass too. I'm leaning a bit in this direction.

.454 is a step above the .44 Mag. and has all the vicious recoil you'd like for paper punching. Being able to shoot .45 Colt is a bonus. It's kind of nice to have one around.

Bro. Jim's suggestion of a .41 cal. is an interesting one if the opposite direction of your inquiry.

Gary's .510 is what I'm sticking with right now. A slightly shorter .500 LB basically and easier to download. Having .510 on the side of your gun makes it stand out, even beside a .500 LB gun! The brass is expensive but lasts forever. I shoot cast almost exclusively but know where to get a couple jacketed options if I wanted them. I like the unique and exclusive, I seek it. It's your choice and your fun.
