It's been a long time since I hunted Jackrabbits. I wrote about them in GUNOLOGY .. here's a couple I talked about in that book.

In East Texas while I was growing up, they weren't that big though, contrary to what they say about everything in Texas. Fried and simmered in gravy they were stringy but tasty!

I WONDER HOW MAY JACKS

.22 magnum, 30 carbine, 300 GNR, 9mm, 10mm, 45acp, 45 Colt, 454 Casull, and 475 Linebaugh. Mostly 9mm lately.
Furthest killed rabbit was with 300GNR revolver at 217 yards (by the rangefinder). He was running, quartering away. Luckiest shot i ever made.
Not too many rabbits here in Deming right now, not sure if someone poisoned them, or if there is some natural poison. Lots of dead rabbits in the last 2 months, with no holes in them.
The most impressive damage to a rabbit was with the 300GNR out of a Contender with a 110 grain V-Max. Flat messes up and re-arranges a jackrabbit.

Shot my first and only in Deming...

Do you guys know of any interesting
hunting opportunities in the Clovis area? Elk is too expensive of course but are there jacks in that area? Hogs? Something else? Thanks!

I’m looking for antelope in Maxwell/ Cimarron area!

My mother’s family ranched in that area long, long ago. Would love to hunt anything there and spend some time there again!

I’m in Deming. Southwest corner of NM

My wife takes care of her parents (age 90 and91) who are in poor health, so we stay at their house. We would be in Lordsburg otherwise. I take the dogs out almost everyday but i don’t have time for much else right now.
If you (or any other misfits) end up here i’ll try and show you where some rabbits are but i’m pretty booked.

I live in the southwest corner of NM

Coyote and rabbit season is year round. They are usually abundant. Residents don’t even need a hunting license for those. A non resident 4 day small game license is $33.00. A non resident, non game license ( prairie dogs, rabbits, ground squirrels, coyotes, skunks and Himalayan tahr) is $65.00.

You gents are in the opposite corner. Clovis, up in the NW corner is pretty arid. Gila monsters and scorpions. I saw a decent heard of pronghorns when out driving the county roads, but nothing like hogs. Thank you for your offers and info. Much appreciated. I was hoping to avoid a drive to west Texas for hogs but I suspect they haven't moved West into that part of NM yet. Maybe some Javelin action somewhere. or, prarie dog sounds like fun.

Just curious. Did you ever eat any jack rabbit?

I have heard stories that they are pretty good to the lower end of horrid.

We did. Grandmother would

Soak them in buttermilk overnight then bread and fry like chicken. After that covered them with gravy and simmered til tender (ish). Sometimes they came out stringy but were much better than possum and raccoon. Not as good as fried chicken or deer steak but just as good as squirrell.

We ate them in the Spring

but not during the summer hot months. Later in the winter we ate them also.

Dad would grind the meat and make a sandwich spread with pickles and olives and onions and whatnot that was pretty good.

My grandmother cooked them in a pressure cooker...

Deboned them and made chili with the meat.

I haven’t eaten the jackrabbits, and

The comparison “better than squirrel” is unusual to me, because squirrel is good. We eat the cottontail rabbits in the winter, but the dogs usually claim them before i get there. My German Shorthair even runs off with the jackrabbits, thinking i’m going to take it from her.
