Covid 19 Stats

Based on today's numbers, so far in the US we have documented 1.2 million cases of Covid 19, This is 0.3% that's three tenths of one percent of our population. Deaths are at 69,579 or .02% that's two hundredths of one percent. These numbers seem somewhat low to me so I looked at the 2017-2018 flu data. It showed an estimated 45 million flu cases which was 14% of the US population and 61,000 deaths were attributed to the flu just under two hundredths of a percent. Just saying, not enough data for a scientific comparison yet. Flu data was for a whole flu season. We need to see how long of a Covid 19 season we have to see how it really compares.

Covid is much worse than seasonal flu as the numbers

for covid are for only about 10 weeks vs 6 months for the flu. In addition, covid leaves lasting and/or permanent damage to heart/lungs/brain/vascular whereas flu does not. There is a lot of unknowns about this new virus so it's not to be underestimated. If you are older with some other underlying condition, which most older people do have, you are going to be in a much worse position than you would be with the seasonal flu. In addition, this virus kills a higher percentage of younger people with no underlying conditions as the seasonal flu. Those numbers you are relating to, they are people with families...MILLIONS of people in deep sorrow.....MILLIONS of lives changed forever. I know..it doesn't really matter...unless it's you and your family being affected directly..then it hits home(not calling anyone out..general comment). My son and his wife are both microbiologists working directly with this virus so I hear about things the public does not. Covid is not to be underestimated.

Woody I don't disagree with your

Assessment, I am just trying to track the numbers. Also we do not yet know for sure if Covid will be seasonal or linger on constantly mutating. One point I wanted to show was that it has aready nearly matched the 2017-18 influenza death rate with significantly fewer documented cases and in a shorter time frame. Though the data are really unreliable since we don't really have a good estimate on the total number of Covid cases it is obviously much more lethal.

There are two separate universities studies

On two separate California counties that is using blood antibodies to determine number of cases in the population. The numbers are staggering, like 50 to 80 times more cases than confirm cases.

We will NEVER know

the exact death toll from the virus alone.

Yes, I daw those and believe they are

Probably realistically representative. I also believe we had coronavirus here right after it broke out in Wuhan province. International was still in full swing back in December and January!

Nope

Sorry chief, that's a load of horse hockey. Be serious, but be real.

This website features interesting visualization data for the spread of the virus with both a logarithmic and linear growth chart plotted using data from Johns Hopkins. So far, it's the best I've found with represented data that is configurable and updated in real time.

Most of the charted graphs that are represented in the media are logarithmic, so it is interesting to see the same data represented with a linear scale.

are saying that opening up the country so soon is going to be a huge mistake and we are setting ourselves up for round 2.

I HF sve no doubt that numbers will increase

I am glad that I am not in the position of having to make that decision. Open up in an attempt to avoid an economic depression and subsequently have an exponential increase in deaths or stay closed, keep the death rate low and achieve financial ruin. I'm sure they have some bean counters crunching the numbers to determine an acceptable death rate to financial recovery ratio!
