Doug stopped by for some fun...

We shot a few different pieces to practice and test. One odd rifle he brought was a unique Ruger #1 Doug bought used as a whole kit with dies and brass, bullets. Old JD did it a while back. We've had several GNR reworked No.1's and it was interesting to see what JD did. This one is basically just rebarreled. I think it may have a mercury recoil reducer as it weighs exactly 10 lb. 2 oz., admittedly the balance is spot on. Word is there were two in this caliber .450 No. 2 Nitro Express 3-1/2", JD still has the other. It's no real improvement over the plain .450 NE except the brass case is shored up and superior as to life and pressure mitigation. It achieves .458 Win. performance at very low comparative pressure due to the huge case. Oh you could boost it in this modern rifle to near .460 Wby. if you wanted, but no need for such excess.

The gun itself is nicely blued with the receiver a slight plumb hue as typical. The barrel looks to be very high quality with a chamber brake and lots of small holes, like I've seen on shotguns. The sights are sturdy steel with a rear island. There are no provision for any optics at all. The nice, away from your hand in recoil, barrel mounted swivel stud is missing and a prominent in the way UM stud was placed on the forend. Must make a note to self before firing, ouch.

The one round we had for testing was loaded with 95 gr. RL15 under a 500 gr. Woodleigh. Recoil was not bad with minimal muzzle rise. (that's Doug's long hair not mine) The weight and brake seem well suited to this platform. Luckily there is an ample supply of Jamison brass as it is a little hard to find. I plan to fix Doug up with some fun hog shooters in the form of 500 gr. RNGC and moderate charges. It will be a unique fun gun.

Neat! I heard JD did those!

I never knew it for sure until now. I think he won some nitro express competitions with his.

I have a #1 in 470 NE that Gary built and it

shoots factory Federal 500gr softs and factory Federal 500gr monolithic solids nearly into the same hole at 50 yards w/o touching the sights. It shoots and handles amazingly well without any recoil dampening assistance. Its a full custom #1 that really has very few equals and well worth the price paid. I may bring it to the next HHC, along with my 505 Gibbs(which does have a mercury tube in the stock). The 470NE and the 505 Gibbs make for quick work on anything roaming the planet...and are just a hoot to shoot.

Maybe I will also bring along the #1 in 450-400 NE too

It’s not much smaller than a .50 BMG for

A sporting ctg. I don’t see why you couldn’t just re-chamber a .458 to .450 N.E. No. 2 if you really wanted one. Add a break of course, pay GNR a few hunnerd and a couple more or three for dies, hit it again for brass. I guess some things don’t need a reason, if it’s fun.

I’m still working on the .500 NE tube Gary did

For the Encore. I’m going with a shotgun forend and have to re-tap to the bigger screws. I did that with my .470 that GNR also did for me a while back. I’ve learned a lot about them.

It’s great fun too!

This odd caliber he’s said to have done 2

It probably causes more trouble than it’s worth but like Pondero said - it May perhaps give the man extra confidence swinging such a huge ctg. He thought that itself was of some value.

Thats neat!

Tennessee who used to post on here a bit wanted one in 450 #2 Nitro Express and he wanted a 475 Jeffery's Nitro Express #2. We did him one of each. The 475 Jeffery's #2 is a long cartridge, much longer than the 470 Nitro but not as powerful. We also built him a 510 Nitro express several years ago, all on the Ruger #1. He wanted the 475 A&M but I talked him out of it. The 500 grain bullet at almost 3000 fps is just too much for the rifle or the shooter.

I think we also built a 450 Nitro for Greg Geiger if my

memory serves, also on the Ruger #1 and I think he shot a Bison at the Hot & Nasty hunt in Texas in '06 or 07.

Ah, the Hot N' Nasty in TX 2007

What an interesting trip. Gary built me a 450 Rigby Rimless, which is the 416 Rigby blown out to accept a .458 bullet. While estimates vary, the bison was 1500 to 2000 lbs. It broke the hitch on the truck that transported it back to the skinning shed. This was also the trip where I used a 416 Rigby No. 1 Beast, also from Gary on an unfortunate pig. The shot blew the pig off his feet, pushed him 4 feet through the air where he hit a fence, slid down and ran off! WB has a video of me finishing the job with a 410NBR. The pics are the 416 Rigby Beast and the 450 Rigby at the range getting ready, and the pics from the hunt. Thanks to Woody for turning me on to the 450Rigby Rimless. With a 550g solid, it is among the best Cape Buffalo medicine available. The 480g 450 Rigby Rimless from Kynoch did a fine job on the bison. bought the 450 Express. I remember building at least 2 of them. I remember Dave Manson asking me if it was the 450 Express thin rim or the 450 express thick rim for the reamer. Obviously it was for a couple of other guys. And thanks for the pics Greg. That was our Hot & Nasty hunt, mid summer, south Texas, 100 degrees, rained the day before and still 100% humidity, definitely Hot & Nasty.Walking thru cane fields in a foot of mud with things running by our feet. I had a scope on my revolver so I borrowed a open sighted revolver from Sean Harper who was a few feet to one side. I squatted down in the mud so I could see what was moving around. It was a bunch of small piglets. I shot one, just big enough to go on the grill.

We did a lot of night time hunting from 10' tall box blinds. Kase and I were in a blind and a herd of bison came thru and almost pushed the blind over. Then an elk in velvet decided to rub his antlers on the legs of the blind and almost pushed it over. Good memories.
