I have a question.

What is your favorite back country hunting boot? Especially for the arid Western US? Thanks

You need to put your feet in them

and I've been happy with them. Gary's comments about Danner coincide with my experience with them also.

Michael is right. Don't take any advice from any of us

just because they work for us doesn't mean they will be OK for you. Try them on at a good store that carries hunting boots. We used to carry Danner boots and they were at the time, one of the top of the line boots. I think every pair we sold came apart within a year and they had to replace them. So we dropped that brand. I picked up a lightweight pair of Kangaroo hide boots in Australia on one of my hunts there. They are real supple, almost like house shoes. They are great for walking in the sand, but I wore them them in Africa a few years back and the area was all small rocks and gravel and they were horrible for that type of terrain.

So decide what type of terrain you will be hunting and check out the boots for that type hunting. The southwest can be horrible on boots. The ground cactus we have will be very destructive on soft leather boots and a lot of areas are covered with small rocks the size of your hand. That area would be rough on lightweight upland boots like my Australian boots. I don't think there is a brand of boots that works well for every type of terrain. And remember, just because they are expensive doesn't mean they are the best.

100% great advice..try them on before purchasing and

if possible take them home and wear them around INSIDE the house if they allow it so you can get a real good feel for the fit. Many people have weird things about their feet and every company has a different manner in which they manufacture shoes/boots for size and fit.....no way would I ever buy shoes/boots on-line or on a suggestion as I have a very high instep and wide feet(thankfully, I don't have a wide ass).

A few years ago I was in the So. Utah

area and did some varminting. I became aware of how abrasive the lava rock that is all over the place is on boots.

I figured one brand or another would be the preferred one. But I can see that a soft leather or thin leather in such terrain is a bad idea.

another thing. Tim above mentioned snake boots

I would recommend snake leggings rather than the actual boots. This way you don't have to invest in a second pair of high dollar boots. Rattlesnakes are a real problem down south of here, especially the Mojave Rattler.

This snake will hit you 2 or 3 times quickly pumping more venom in you than a standard rattler that just hits you once. And there is really no certain spot where the snakes are not abundant. It is not unusual to come across a scene like this.

and someone (probably me) said he wished for a flame thrower. Somebody on here (I don't think he was a regular) jumped on me about killing those defenseless snakes, that they never hurt anyone, that it was just their mating season and so on. He was a herpetologist, which is a person that was born missing a whole lot of brain cells. So, in his honor, here they are again, and i would still like to have a flame thrower.
