I'm looking over the SP101 in .357, any thoughts?

I know they are hefty but feel really solid and I know how to work on it if it ever needed it. Parts and such should be no problem either. They just feel like you could smack someone up-beside the head with one and it would keep running, old school.
I was looking at this odd syphilis special edition or some such. It had a flat top and basically Novack dovetailed sights on it, 2.5" stainless. Very interesting.
syphilis special edition??

In print. I must confess I don’t remember reading any of his work, but surely I have. I did order the lightly used (makes me wonder why) rig complete with box and papers for some $200 under where I could have acquired another like it. They seem to hold value well. Today is the 35th anniversary of my current full time employment, so I rewarded myself a little.
It’s the 2.5” model. Basically a flat topped revolver with auto pistol sights shoehorned into it. I’ve seen it done custom but not a factory run.
It looks like this, compared to a 9mm compact.

The good ones I can count on one hand and have 2 fingers left over. But I know nothing about Wylie Clapp. i don't know that I ever read anything from him. Not sure what he has done to garner several Wylie Clapp Specials, or maybe he knows something on some people. Mox Nix, I have no opinion either way.
I had one of the first SP 101 revolvers

made by Ruger. It was the short snubnosed barrel with fixed sights.
I carried it often and it was quite accurate. One day I was at the range practicing DA shooting and a bad factory load blew the barrel off.
Ruger replaced it with a new SP 101 but with the 4 1/4" adjustable sight model. I love it. To me it is a powerful "kit gun".
It seems the Gp100, Super RH, and SP all have basically

the same design lockwork, just scaled to the different sizes. I like carrying lite snubbies but not shooting them! The SP seemed to have plenty of heft for cartridge. We used to worry about the K-frame's getting shot loose, now J-frame size guns in .357 are commonplace. Yet the design is exactly the same as the old days.
For an old gun I have always admired the Colt Agent with a shorter grip than the Cobra. But again I was figuring it was designed for lots of carry and only a little shooting. The Dick special is a favorite but I know a little about Colt lockwork and it will eventually get pounded a bit and run out of time. It's exaggerated on the bigger bore small frame guns. Fitting a new hand takes lots of (skill) patience too. Seemingly in short supply today. So are parts.
A buddy had one of the first .357 SP101's...

...that showed up at the local shop back in the day.
With Federal 125's the blast at the indoor range was God-awful but there was no discomfort other than that. The grip soaked it all up.

I picked up an old Colt Cobra on the cheap years ago because a cop had smacked someone across the bridge of the nose with the trigger guard. Bent the guard and tied up the trigger. He unloaded it because he was afraid the trigger guard would break off if he tried to fix it.
I have no such concerns about my SP101s. I think one could beat a small Hyundai into submission with an SP101.
I have an early one with 3” barrel

Fixed sight so I had a S&W kit gun sight added. Had all the edges smoothed and trigger done. Great gun to shoot and carry around the farm.
Easy on the hand with wood hogue’s.
This one? I like it.

with some contoured wood ones. I desire the factory rubber grips with some snazzy inserts. It seems to fill a small void in my collection.
I had a 3 inch. If it would have had adj sights

to compensate for my poor (at the time) skills. It had an action job and wasn't bad. Bought a set of Badger Boot Grips - bulbous but tamed the recoil. I think 327 Federal is probably the sweet spot for the SP101.

Here is my s.p. Sold as "Phoenix" edition about 1997. Much deeper blue than standard Ruger.

Hardwood grips for them. Both where 2.5 inch with fixed sights. One was double action only, with out the hammer spur. It carried really nice and shot well like Rugers due, of course.
And my wife Tara has a Reederized target model
