.38 +P vs. .357

Is a short barreled .357 (2.5") really not much more than a hotly loaded or +P .38 Special due to the short barrel not burning all of the available powder? I sometimes opt to carry my 2.5" Model 19 when camping/hiking in CO and was wondering if I should move up to the 6" 586. I just don't see the need for my .44 where we typically go.

Tom, I think this video link will give you some insight.....

I watched it quite a while back. I use a couple of snub nose revolvers as back ups (Ruger SP-101, Ruger LCR and S&W 638 Bodyguard) and went looking for info when the rules changed at work and they dropped .357 Mag from the approved list and would only issue .38+P. I was curious in the real world performance differences. I was under the idea that in snubbies, a .357 wasn't much better than a .38+P, seems there might be a difference....

I like Paul Harrell's videos. He does a lot of work and usually arrives at what I think is a reasonable conclusion. Plus he doesn't stand on his past laurels, is funny and not a blow hard.
