What's your favorite 22 LR Auto Handgun?

The thread below got me thinking. Nothing good ever comes from that.

In 1979 at the age of 15, an uncle gave me a Browning Nomad. How many remember those?

I still have it and it still looks new. No telling how many thousands of rounds have been put thru that gun. Ammo was $.87 a box in those days.

Later I switched to a new Buckmark. Have two fully customized with Tactical Solutions barrels. They shot tiny groups at 75 yards and have shot prairie dogs at over 100 yards with them.

Not wanting anyone to argue over which is best. Just tell us your favorite...

normal human needs, but I enjoy them. Years ago good friend Joe Benner (real name Huelet Benner), who shot for the military in the 50s and early 60s and set some records that still stand, was coming down with Alzheimers. He came by the shop one day and handed me a big box. Inside were 3 guns. He wanted to give them to me before the Alzheimer got too bad.
One was a High Standard 44 Auto Mag from when they distributed them. Joe was a factory rep at the time, mainly due to him using High Standard pistols to set the various records. The second gun was his High Standard Supermatic in 22 LR. This was his baby and one that he set all those records with. The 3rd was just a custom 1911 45 ACP an Army armorer slicked up for him. That 22 High Standard is one of my favorites. It had no finish on it and was pretty ratty. Joe had been out of the Army for almost 20 years and had neglected it a bit. And this being Florida the humidity had got to it. He asked me to fancy it up a bit and reblue it and he would give it to me, which I did. Anyway that is probably my favorite 22 LR, not due to it being a very accurate 22 LR but because it was from a friend. Joe passed on a while after that.

newer. It has the holes drilled under the barrel to add weights and it has the button in the front of the action to change barrels. Trigger stop with a super smooth trigger. Great gun.

is a single action revolver! The barrel is from a Model 52 Winchester target rifle ... one chamber is opened for .22 Magnum .. has a speed hammer and straightened trigger and a nice light let-off. Also has the Taylor Throat. Dad bought it in 1963 and rebuilt it the same year.

Mines a Mk 3, I suppose I’d like the Mk 4 with the updates.
It’s a bit heavy to carry on the hip for a .22 though. Been admiring the newer lightweight 4” barreled ones for carrying around. Hard to beat the bull barrel for just shooting though.

He carried it when he and my Dad hunted snowshoe hare and cottontail rabbits with their beagles.

I have others but it is special.

years ago, went looking for it, can picture setting it down in at least 100 places, pretty sure my ex-wife picked it up while getting her stuff. If'n I can find the receipt might still have the SN, not sure I could call it stolen after all this time?

Anywho, was my favorite, good balance and accurate

It is one of the early versions and I have added on and changed bits and pieces over the years. My sentimental favorite is my fathers Ruger standard auto. Built in the first couple weeks of production. I still have the original cod box.[image]

My first was a 44 mag SBH and then I got a Ruger MK I. I’ve shot a few others. But, that thing was money.

Here is mine

This hails from 1957. I bought it for $75 and parkerized it, added some old stock Numrich grips and it shoots MOA with ammo it prefers. How can you top that. Plus magazines are $20. You take the new made mags and switch the button to the other side. There you go. It's competition of the day were the Colt Woodsman and varied High-Standards. Both are gone today due to manufacturing costs and their high refinement. They were fantastic shooters but just too fancy. The Ruger trigger is crude by comparison but that can be helped. Mine is fine from tens of thousands of rounds fired over the last couple centuries.

The MKII 5" bull barrel at top was purchased new in 1984 and has probably +50K rounds through it. The majority being the old Federal Lightening rounds. You could purchase a brick at Walmart or K-mart for around $9. Would generally shoot a brick at a time. Only purchased when going shooting, no need to hoard, there was an unlimited supply in the 80's and 90's. This gun was built before the corporate lawyers got involved and the factory trigger breaks at less than 3 lbs. with no creep.

The Ruger 22/45 MKIV was purchased in 2018 and has seen many rounds in two years. I have replaced the entire trigger assembly as the factory had 1/4" of creep and broke at over 7 lbs.

The Taurus TX-22 was purchased last year at Christmas and has quickly become my "go to" gun when shooting a 22 LR pistol.

I like the Kimber. It has been reliable has great sights and a familiar 1911 trigger.

Buckmark. The Model 41 is exceptionally accurate and feels perfect in my hand...... and love the trigger. The Browning is almost as accurate, but the Model 41 feels like it was made for my hand.
