Hello All:

If you do not mind me asking, what are the pros and cons of the state/region you live in?

I've been blessed in traveling to many states but never spent more than a couple of weeks on one area to make a good evaluation.

As an example, I spent a good two weeks in Hurricane Utah a few years ago. I really love the area but I do believe that the prospects of a full time job with benefits would require me to drive to St. George. Not bad since it isn't a huge commute. Land in that area is getting pricier as it seems to be very attractive to live near the entrance to Zion National Park.

So that is an example of what I see. What could you tell me about your particular area?

Pros: nice weather and lots of Shooting ranges/Gun shops. Lots of small businesses to serve all the retirees. Con: Lots of +60 retirees who drive like they are pulling a 53' trailer.

LOL! And the rest like their hair is on fire.

That Interstate 75 is the most dangerous road I've ever been on! It was like I was running the Daytona 500, with my most precious cargo. Plus it always rains. Running a steady 80 mph I was getting blown off the highway on all sides.

Too fast and too much intense focus, it's not fun for me. Lots of folks die in FL on the roads, mostly drunks but not all.

rual west Tn.. in dyer, and Rutherford

they are small older towns, almost no real crime, lots of lakes, ponds, woods, easy going laid back--not far from larger towns if you want to go-- lots of folk know lots of folk
I am happy and glad to be here

there are a lot of good things about Florida too. The rain

every afternoon at 3 PM is only during one season. Just like our Monsoon season here from July 4th to Labor Day, it rains every day about 3 PM which cools things off and helps things grow. They also have the Love Bug season when a gazillion love bugs are flying around, but that is no problem either. I didn't like the way the politics were going and all the Haitian and Jamaican immigrants that were bringing the crimes with them. The summers were crowded with fat old ladies lying out on the beach like a beached whale wearing a bikini. I was never into lying out in the sun roasting but to each his own. And the nude beach down around where Rick Sim lives was something you never want to see. It was the same fat old ladies lying out on the beach without the bikini. If you ever wanted to lose weight, go to the nude beach before lunch.

Amen to that...gravity is a bitch

Open area. Beautiful Alleghany mountains. Cheap taxes. But the best part is that my grandkids are 10 minutes away. Cons-Cuomo. Most people in this area loathe him.

I like western NY and the Adirondacks

Last November I did a goose hunt in Carthage NY and liked the region. It seemed very pro hunting and sportsman.

Now I do not want to step on toes but the big issue for me would be the NY Sullivan Act. I spoke with people who said it is a pain to get your NY permit and some have taken two years to do so.

Believe it or not in Massachusetts most towns will issue you an unrestricted license to carry as long as you take a safely class and have a clean background. It is the bigger cities like Boston and Springfield that give you a hard time.

Hmm

Asking personal info about location, not giving any of ones self, other than vague description of ones travels?

Good Point

I live in southern Worcester County Massachusetts.

Pros: My job with benefits although it is a 45 minute to 1 hour commute depending on the traffic and weather conditions.

Close friends in the area.

One decent family member( he has a small 40 acre farm I can hunt on)

Familiarity with the area:

Long time membership in Rod and Gun club.

Cons:

Summers seem to be more humid. I don't do humidity too well.

Winters: They aren't as cold and snowy as my youth but I really dislike shoveling.

Hunting: It seems to have gone downhill in the last decade. I do not see the deer like I once did.

Taxes: Taxes are rather high as well as overall cost of living.

Gun laws: Although I live in a small town without a problem of getting a CCW it always seems to be an uphill battle with the gun laws. I'd love to own and hunt with a suppressor but that is not legal.

Hunting Laws: Massachusetts is a shotgun state for deer. I love handgun hunting but I cannot hunt deer or turkey with a handgun. You cannot carry a handgun while bowhunting, shotgun hunting or muzzleloader hunting for deer.

Hunting other game: Small game is almost non existent. I would love to shoot some rabbits with my 22 pistol but most of them are in people's back yards. Same with woodchucks. It sounds weird but there was more opportunity for this as a teen than now.

Land prices: Land here is very expensive and when I really think about it, I would not want to buy a piece of land and live in Massachusetts. I do now due to inheritance but I would not really want to move here.

Political Climate: Massachusetts is very liberal-left with the exception of small towns. The greater Boston area sways the rest of the state. As an example last Saturday the chief of police in my old home town participated in a Black Lives Matter demonstration. I was out in the woods thankfully but I can kind of see the winds of change( an ill wind) moving my way.

So sorry about that. Many long time posters here know I am from Massachusetts.

Pros:
Lots of public land, open spaces
Personal freedoms encouraged
Weather is a varied as you like
History
It is still a western state and real cowboys exist
Gun laws
Cons:
Population growth
Cost of living increasing
People move here and want to make it where they came from
Brutal heat in places 3 months of the year
We are a border state with border issues

The curse for Arizona is the influx of accursed Californians

They sell out from where they live, arrive in AZ with oodles of cash, overpay for everything AND, to top it off, bring their Republic of California politics with them which is changing Arizona, and NOT for the good -- they truly have the Midas touch in reverse!

Mostly cons. If I wasn't from here it would have to be a real lucrative job (or lady) to make me want to move here.

Glad you're thinking about getting out of here John

Hello Howard. I am at a new phase in life

John W

Tuesday, June 09, 2020, 12:55 (2262 days ago) @ Howard

I'm all alone and responsible for only myself.

I like what I am doing and would like to transfer to one of the western centers such as:

Wind River Wyoming( my ideal aka home area of Bob Milek)

Nampa, Idaho

Weber Basin near Ogden Utah

Nemo South Dakota

Reno Nevada

I have also considered working at one of the wilderness therapy programs in Southern Utah. There is the Diamond Ranch near Hurricane Utah. I've worked with disturbed youth for a long time( it may explain a lot of things)

I just do not want to go into a place cold without any kind of decent living.

There is a center near Tucson

and Phoenix but I do believe it is hotter than Purgatory there in the summer.

Another spot is Western North Dakota and some parts of Montana.

I need to go to the company website and look. Even if the job is something different it would be a chance to move out of southern New England.

if I had to take a job flipping burgers I would do so

to get the hell out of that area.

I am in the planning stages right now

Next step is a huge estate sale. I have three to four generations of stuff that I want to get rid of.

Then I need to figure out what is the best course of action for the house.

Do I keep it and rent it out for a source of income? Or do I sell outright?

I want to make sure I do not screw myself.

I am not an expert on this subject, but look at what

is going on all across the country. Right now home values are high here in Arizona, but if we have a lot of riots this summer those values will go down. It won't take a lot of bad press for home values in your area to hit rock bottom. If it were me I would sell and get one less worry off my back. My personal opinion, which means diddly.
