My Back Country Setup

I've assembled what I think may be the perfect camping, hiking and back country setup. 6" L-frame in a Guide's Choice chest holster. 6" may be a bit long but it maximizes the potential of the .357 from a revolver. With the proper load it should handle anything I may encounter, guys with bad intentions, coyote, feral dogs and black bear. A lot of people shun the .357 for black bear, but it was around long before the .44 magnum and it killed plenty of black bear, and bigger game. This set up will most likely become my white tail deer choice, perfect for where I hunt. I'm open to opinions on my choice, and hearing what you may carry for your back country set up.

I agree. I carried back in the late

60,s a S&W 357 that I still own. I live at the time and hunted New Hampshire and Maine. I also reload, so I never had a problem on what ammo I was using. I did in future years go to a 44 mag. And it is a great round here in New England. Now I am using Gary’s custom rounds and they are just unbelievable! Remember, load to where you hunt. Just my
Two cents! Pete

It depends on the back country.

If I am out West of the big river it will be a Ruger SRH in 480.

East of the river I have been carrying a Ruger SR1911 in 10mm.

I too poo-poo the .357 sometimes but I'm a huge

hypocrite too. lol I have a L-grame 4" 7-shot. Loaded with 180 gr. FNGC it slings them out at 1350 fps easily using these new slow powders. That will leave a serious mark. I took a cheap but real leather USAF copy chest holster and re-boned it to fit the S&W. It came with a 10-round canvas ctg. holder that fits on it too. The canvas won't turn the brass green either like leather. It makes a handy kit.
