i just got back from a gun show. a guy there had a browning model 63 rifle in 32-20 condition was around 85-95% some small handling marks he wanted $995. for it is that a good price ?

With the price of Marlins I'd say not too bad.

That is a Japanese Winchester copy and actually a better gun than the Winny ever was, arguably. Only, did it have a tang safety?! That is a deal breaker for me. Yucky! Yuck, yuck!

I had a 1886 in .45-90 with a tang safety. Shot fantastic, well made, but I just couldn't stand that feature and finally sold it.

you sound like the old farts that bitch and complain about

the transfer bars that Ruger (and pretty much everybody else) uses in their single actions. You have a gun that is much safer and with a whole generation (almost 2 generations) that have grown up with transfer bars giving them a gun with no transfer bar or any other safety is just asking for trouble. There are hundreds of old model Rugers out there with some minor problems that the factory would fix if the owners would send them in. But the old goats are too stubborn (or stupid) to send the gun back to Ruger to get it fixed because they don't Ruger putting the transfer bar system in it. Idiots.. and the only ones they are hurting are themselves.

When I came out with the original #5 years ago on my own frame I got a written OK from Ruger to copy exactly their old model revolver, no transfer bar. When we were building the first batch my guys (all under 30) would load the guns, hand them to me and I would do the shooting for accuracy and reliability. During the first days shooting 2 of my guys accidentally let a round go off in the shop trying to hold the hammer back at half cock to load or unload the gun. The reason? They had never handled a gun without a transfer bar. Nobody was hurt in the shots but it showed me something I needed to see before the guns got out the door. I immediately stopped production of the guns and ordered parts to change an old model to a transfer bar just like Ruger does. Unfortunately that took months and I lost a lot of sales but I slept better at night. I still have almost 100 frames sitting in one of my safes that are no transfer bar frames because the company that built the hammers with the transfer bar system went out of business. About that time Ruger got new ownership or management and wouldn't sell the hammers and transfer system so I was caught between a rock and a hard spot. I may figure something to do with them one day. In the meantime I have $12,000 in frames sitting gathering dust. It was just a bad and expensive decision on my part. I have put out feelers trying to buy the old model parts that Ruger sends back with the converted guns, as that is all I need to finish one of the guns. So far I have obtained about a dozen.

Back to the original part of this post, it is silly to whine and bitch about a safety that has been added to a gun. Enjoy the gun and quit bitching and whining and acting like an old fart who is too stuck in his ways to change. That newly converted Ruger with the transfer bar system can be made just as slick and smooth as any old model and a whole lot safer. No gun company is going to remove the safety features of their guns so the only person you are hurting is yourself. Grow up.

DIDN'T NEED THE NEW SAFETIES BUT IF ANYONE ELSE WAS AROUND ME I WANTED THEM TO HAVE THEM. I WONDER HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE NOT BEEN SHOT ONLY BECAUSE OF THE NEW SAFETIES. AND GARY IS RIGHT. THE NEW RUGERS CAN BE SLICKED AND SMOOTHED AS GOOD AS THE OLDER MODELS; MAYBE EVEN BETTER.

thanks John. It is hard telling those old guys, you know,

those old guys older than you and me. I tell them we can slick up a new model as smooth and slick as a well worn old model and they say bad things about my ancestry and what I had for lunch.

Is so much cleaner and less obtrusive than a cross bolt button on the side of the receiver. I’m now used to the Marlins. They do manufacture delete retrofits for both Marlin and Rossi. But that’s more trouble than I really want to endure. The Rossi can be replaced with a peep sight. That might be interesting.

We live in an ultra sue happy time. Manufacturers have done a good job coming up with solutions, mostly for keeping the industry solvent. It is what it is.

It just was not my cup of tea. Surely good gun though.

Browning 63 came out before the era of tang safeties and works just like the original Winchester...

This spring they seem to be running 900 to 1000.

Maybe I saw a nice one go for 850 but seems like 900 is the start. They are nice...
